  • Battle of the Christmas Lights

Last weekend I put up my Christmas lights. I went with LED's all white. This is the first time I've ever put up lights.

My neighbor - I call him Steve - had a small string of lights already up and a set of Christmas Geese on his lawn. Unfortunately my boston terrier developed a lustful crush on one of these geese - so reparations are probably due to Steve for the damages.

Anyways, Steve goes and puts up more lights - multicolored - and some of them blink!

Should I answer this challege, or let it go because of the thing with the goose? Or should I start a christmas light jihad and go all Griswold style on him?

I say you go all-in ... anything less than blinking lights synchronized to music will be a disappointment.

Don't forget lasers and fake snow.

WELL... seeing as how we're on a personal finance forum, I feel obligated to at least mention the cheap alternative.

Yes, I think it should look like Santa and all his elves and reindeer had way too much eggnog, cookies & carrots & therefore have now barfed lights, blowups, animatron wooden soldiers and dancing candy-canes all over your rooftop, windows - inside and out, right up to the very 7/8th of an inch to the property line of your lawn.

His lighting a goose?? He should have known it would set the fuse to the powderkeg! One step over the line Sweet Jesus! Don't forget to light some luminaries by cracky!

Wow. Something like that last picture would probably lead to gunfire.

I think that picture is really onto something here ... they've got Homer Simpson & SpongeBob in Halloween outfits in order to stretch out the display time.

Wincrasher, maybe you can throw in some Football stuff for the SuperBowl or a blow-up cupid & leave the decorations up until Valentine's Day!~!~!

Absolutely answer his challenge and assert your dominance in the neighborhood decorations category.

Good move using LEDs. We converted to all LEDs 3 years ago and the savings on the electrical bill is really noticable.
We have a trio of Christmas Trees that has lights that dance to the music (I only put the music on for a couple of hours each night from 6-8pm- leave 'em wanting more is my motto )
This year DH found some deer in LED format, so we have added them to ou display. .

I must be getting grinchy about these things, but I cannot stand those giant, cartoony, inflatable character decorations. Thank goodness my neighbors across the street already took down their inflatable Thanksgiving Turkey rather than torturing me with it from the end of August till the end of February as they did last year.

I love to drive into neighborhoods where lots of people have gone overboard with the lights, though.

I don't mind them as long as people don't over do it. Some homes put up 3 or 4 or 6 of them and it is just too much. Nicely working one or maybe two into a display is fine. One house we pass regularly just lines up a bunch of them across their front lawn. Looks more like a store selling the things than a house displaying them.

Hello, I'm new here. A couple thoughts:

                        1) Wincrasher I think that you should "drop the bomb" and go all out.
                        2) Lux, that photo is awesome.
                        3) Joan, I used to feel the same way. Sometimes people let things slide. But if it's going to slide, I'll take crazy, sun-tan creating christmas light shows any time.

BA your link is HI-Larious (said with Jayne accent), I was actually LOL (for real)

On the blow up, I love the ones that are like snowglobes...in other folks yards, no need for my electricity going to that, they look just as cool in the elsewhere and are free.
