get a security system?

    Property don't care to spend much protecting it.

    Yes, property can be replaced. If someone broke in, my first thought would be to get the heck out of the house ASAP. They can take whatever they want, I will call the police and I have have insurance. But, I really dont' have any great valuables anyway so I don't know what they would take. I have lots of stuff stored in my unlocked garage. If it gets stolen so be it, then I will probably start locking things.

    As for personal protection, a dog is great but don't get one just for that reason because they are a lot of work. Owning a gun is your right but you should be very comfortable with handling firearms and realize that gun accidents probably happen more frequently than getting killed by an intruder. The worst situation would be to have a loaded gun lying around that you forgot about and that was found and played with by a grandchild, etc. It has happened so fear of that keeps me from going in that route though I am learning to handle firearms. As for a security service, I think alarms and lights would be reasonable. But, if you really feel unsafe then maybe it is time to move as well.
