  • I have a job interview today

I applied a year ago to work for the state taking care of developementally disabled ppl, had my civil service test in March, and finally am up for an interview. I have not really done this kind of work before but have many family members that do it. I have worked with them for a short time in a small warehouse like place that gives the consumers a place to work so I am not unaware of how the people are. I am nervous, I really want this job. I work at a factory right now, that I am so totally bored with. I feel I can do this. They want me for 3rd shift so mainly i will be doing chores and bed checks.

I am afraid that because I have never interviewed for this type of work I may say the wrong thing.................

You can be fairly certain everyone interviewing will be nervous, so you are all on equal footing there. If you get the job, I'm sure there will be some training, so you don't need to worry now about being unsure of some things. Your stability in your factory work is probably a really big plus for you. In fact, your whole picture as a stable person will probably bode well for you. I'm sure they are interviewing as many people as they can, though. I bet there were a gazillion applications. Do you think it will be helpful if you can mention knowing people who do this work? God luck. Crossing my fingers for you.

Be confident. Radiate a can-do attitude. Use good eye contact. Don't say you don't know something. Tell them instead that you're willing to learn. Smile, and be pleasant. Don't come across tired, disinterested, or stressed. Eat breakfast before the morning interview...at the end, thank them for their time, and don't forget to ask for the job in the end...learn to listen to the interviewer and come up with a list of at least 10 questions about the position....asking questions makes you look very good, interested and intelligent.

I think it went well, they are not allowed to offer me a job until they meet with the higher ups.

They didn't really ask me too much just went on in great detail what the job entails then did i think I could handle it?

The waiting now is the hardest part!!

Taking care ppl with disability requires full time commitment, tremendous patients, and anger management control. I have family/friends/relatives members who works are care homes....and I tell you it is NOT EASY!

Don't take things personal as sometimes they will spit at you, throw tantrum, or hit/scratch you. Your patient will certainly be tested. Hang in there....

I wish you good luck in your new endeavor! Congrats!

I haven't heard from the first house, but a second one called for a separate interview. In NYS you apply in a central location and they send it to all the counties on a checklist that you check as willing to travel to.

Tripod, Thanks but I am aware of that because almost everyone in my family does it. My kids grandma brings one of her consumers to my daughters christmas concerts for her inclusion trip.
