Re: how much should you tip the pizza delivery guy?

I never send out for pizza or at least I haven't in the last 19 years, so its a moot point.

This is something I adhrere to. Let's be honest; not everyone's honest. I like to do the math and then, if it wasn't fair, next time they can get zero tip!!!.. or a very meager one.

I can agree with this statement, except Exceptional Service isn't the standard and a little grease in the form of cash money, sometimes oils the wheel.

Back in my younger, more frivolous days, my household had a reputation for tipping well, my husband had a reputation for being a "big spender" so we received our deliveries first, our food was warmer. At restuants we frequented we had more generous portions than other, the "better" tables etc...

My mother in law's favorite past time used to be to go to the waffle house - don't know if you have them in your area for those of you who live in the states- but anyway, she used to go and have a cup of coffee and bless her waitress with a 50.00 tip. She got a kick out of it, and if any of you have seen some old time waffle house waitresses, they could really use the blessing.

I agree that the cost should be included--it would make it much more simple. However; this is an imperfect world and thusly we have the tipping process. And 15% is the standard for decent service, 20% for over the top service. I used to be a waiter to get myself through college and still think that if people don't want to leave a tip (the people who leave nothing even if there was great service) they should either eat at home or go to a place where tipping isn't expected; aka where there isn't someone WAITING on you.

If you can't afford a few bucks extra for the lad or lady servicing you then you probably shouldn't be eating out in the first place. By the way, that wasn't directed at anyone in particular. Just my thoughts on the subject.

To the OP: 2-3 bucks for a single pizza--I only live 2 blocks away. Heh, which is why I don't order "in" usually.

You get a wage though don't you? If one of my staff asked a customer for a tip for doing their job I'd rightly expect the customer to tell them where to get off. The customer has paid my company for the job, I then pay my staff to do that job.

Sure you're waiting on me at a restaurant but that's your job, the thing the restaurant pays you to do. Should I tip the kitchen staff for washing my dishes? How about I don't pay for my meal but instead just give a tip if I think it's worth it? Do you think the chef would go for that?

In the US restaurants aren't required (and therefor don't) to pay minimum wage to servers. They are allowed to pay them half of the federally mandated minimum wage. So they get something like $2.50/hour.

Now, the employer IS required to guarantee minimum wage, but most employers will fire you if you ask for it. They figure you're either lying that you didn't get enough tips to bring you to minimum wage or that you're really bad at your job.

Knowing this (and it is common knowledge in the US) it is somewhat of a theft of service if you don't tip.

I get a wage now, and I got a wage then too, at $2.50 an hour. Tips are EXPECTED by both the employer and the government. In fact if you don't claim at least 8 percent of your total sales they tack it on because they think that people tip at least that.

And if I were still a waiter and waited on you and you left me no tip, that would just be depressing. Of course, I never had someone not tip me because I was good at what I did. Its insulting and rude to not tip; something I would never do to a competent server. IMHO, the people who don't tip are pretty pathetic and cheap. And yes people, that is "cheap", not "frugal".

Re: how much should you tip the pizza delivery guy?

The only time I will not tip is when the service is really bad. I'm not talking when the restaurant is full I can understand that. I'm talking about when the restaurant is slow and your waitress/er is just standing around talking to their co-workers and just ignoring you. That is when I will get the manager and let them know what is going on and tell them. We've been in situations where we got a trainee and that was fine because the trainer was right there to make sure everything was fine.

Now if the service is exceptional I will tip more than usual and let the manager know what a good job that person is doing and will ask for them when we go to that restaurant again.

We tip 2 dollars for one pie. 3 dollars for a few extras like heroes. 5 dollars for a large order when company is coming. As we don't order very much any more the situation rarely arises.

I don't like the tipping idea at all except for exceptional service, but that said, I still do it.
I don't order pizzas delivered...but if I did, I would probably quickly figure about 15% (maybe rounding up if I had it) and would only tip more if there was something special done. If the pizza was way late, cold, or the delivery guy was rude I would either not tip or only give a little. Even in a restaurant, I tip according to the service I receive, but I almost always tip. I can only remember a couple times not tipping...and that was because of EXTREMELY poor service! Like almost no service!
