  • Why I will never again make an Ebay purchase with a CC

Less than 2 months ago DH bought a set of golf clubs on Ebay. The seller had a stellar rating with a ton of sales (99.8% positive, and the negative comments we saw were minor things like griping about unwillingness to ship out of country), and they accepted credit card payment which we thought was good since I carry just a very small balance in my Paypal account. The price on the clubs was great, well below retail, and the quality was excellent, exactly as represented. Sounds like a good deal, right? Nope.

Today we got our credit card statement and I noticed a $12 charge that I did not recognize. Called the company, and it turned out to be the first of what would have been a recurring monthly charge that started when DH paid for his clubs. The charge was not from the company he bought the clubs from, but from another company that was able to trace the source of the "order." They have promised to credit the charge back to us and not make any further charges ... and of course I'll make sure they keep their word! If necessary, I am prepared to cancel this card to prevent any further unauthorized charges.

We went back and went over the original Ebay listing with a fine tooth comb and there was NOTHING about this monthly charge. Either this is a 100% unauthorized charge, or DH accidentally clicked on some popup when he was paying for the clubs.

You'd better bellieve we'll be using only Paypal for any future Ebay purchases.

I wonder how many people never catch on to these sorts of things? This is probably why this seller can sell clubs at such a competitive price; he/she/they are making their "real money" off these monthly charges. In fact, DH checked the CC bill before handing it over to me and he didn't catch it (like lots of folks he tends not to worry about little charges). But I do "sweat the small stuff" and spotted it, and DH has learned he needs to check every line item from now on.

If you like the CC, ask your CC company to reissue you a new card with a new number. That grants you the same security as canceling, but lets you keep the card you may like having/using. I've had this done for me twice for a couple different reasons. Only downside is that on your credit report, it's reported as closing one account and opening another, so it could potentially decrease your FICO temporarily. However, account longevity is (somehow) maintained -- it still shows that I've had the card for 5 years, even though I've only had that particular account number for 1.5 years.

Hmmmmm. And you think this won't happen with PayPal?

PayPal accounts can also be similarly charged. In fact, I fought it, PayPal would do nothing, the seller finally made reimbursement.

I ended up closing PayPal then, and will not purchase through them nor ebay again.

I don't understand how it's possible for some company to charge your credit card monthly after you purchase something on eBay. When you pay with a credit card through PayPal, the seller never sees your credit card. PayPal charges your credit card for the amount of the transaction and sends that money to the seller. Something just doesn't add up. Could this just be a coincidence, totally unrelated to the golf clubs purchase? Generally, you have a lot more protection when you pay for something with your credit card, as opposed to using your PayPal balance. I agree with what others have said. You should ask your credit card company to issue you a new card with a different number, but keep your account.

That's true, but what OP is saying is that they didn't use PayPal. They gave their credit card number directly to the seller who then used it to sign up for that monthly service.

Definitely, stick with PayPal for all ebay transactions. In fact, a great many ebay sellers, myself included, only accept PayPal now because of all the scams and frauds out there.

that is why I always use paypal....paypal has helped me when sellers were sometimes not so courteous, and I have had my money refunded when the seller never shipped the item or the item was not as listed.

I also try to avoid sellers who want payment through another online system...that makes me unconfortable.

Well, you have legal protections if you use your credit card that you don't have with Paypal. Any help you got with a difficulty from Paypal was simply a courtesy - you can't really count on that. I'd stick with the CC and then just contest anything that pops up you don't recognize or agree to.

Well, some may feel the help on paypal was just a courtesy, but I will take that courtesy over other options.

I prefer using paypal as 1) I can shop at multiple vendors and not give out any personal cc information 2) there are often coupons I can use from paypal to help reduce the price of the item I bought.

Also, if your credit card is tied to pay pal,.....why would your cc suddenly not be of assistance?

Don't knock Paypal until you have tried it. It seems like a far better option than giving multiple vendors your CC number.

Paypal has been hacked, don't you remember? Lots of people's information got out. The only "personal" info you give out with your cc is of course the number and your billing address. What does paypal have in it's system on you? who sees this information?

What I'm saying is that you CC gives you protections dictated by law. That is $50 max liability if you report a loss. And you have the right to dispute any charge and there are definite rules on how that is handled.

When you link your paypal account to a cc - the cc is only a transaction with paypal. So if you have a dispute with a merchant, you cc won't help you with it. So you don't really have any protections.

Now granted, if you are buying a $25 pair of sneakers, it's not really a big deal. If I were buying a $2500 camera, I'd definately use my credit card.

I think it is fair to say that people should use whatever feels best for them. Arguing about what one prefers is silly, really.

I adore paypal and like it better than giving my cc card out to different merchants.

I have bought expensive items with paypal, but probably wouldn't spend over a grand online anyway.

                    To each his own.

                    Paypal rocks!!!

Ps. CC companies have been hacked, too.

I agree. I love PayPal. I've used them since very shortly after they came into existence. Back in the "olden" days, ebay was so much more difficult. After an auction ended, I had to send an e-mail with payment info. Then I had to wait for a check, then wait for the check to clear and then ship the item. Now, an auction ends at 8pm and I usually have the money in my account within 30 minutes and often ship the item the next morning. It has made both buying and selling so much easier and greatly streamlined record keeping. Plus, the money in my PayPal account earns interest. For quite a while, PayPal had one of the highest interest rates in the country (not true currently). I kept 5-digit amounts in that account and reaped the benefits and never had a moment's trouble.

Yes, people have reported security issues, but that has happened with many major banks, credit unions, credit bureaus and other financial institutions. I think even the military has had security breaches of data and confidential info.
