        Re: Where are you from?

Currently I live in TX, about 10 miles from the Rio Grande. I'm in what they call the Rio Grande Valley. The best part is that citrus is really cheap when it's fresh.

The worst part is that family is in OK and it's a 13 hour drive to see them. I haven't seen my mom since March.

I grew up in Jerseyville. You might have heard of Alton. Alton is about 20 miles (I think) south of Jerseyville.

Hi neighbor... I have heard of Jerseyville. Actually depending of if you graduated from Jerseyville High School, I knew your librarian- Gladys Butler. She Retired I believe in the late 80's so depending on your age.

I grew up in and around Alton... spent many a skip day at the Piasa Bird and on the river doing things i shouldn't have but what is youth without a little indiscretion.

Yup! Graduated from Jerseyville High in 1988. I don't remember most of the teachers or anything. I moved to Portland a month or so after I graduated and avoided going back like the plague. I never got to go out much (overprotective parents), but I remember driving by the Piasa Bird.

Did you go to any submarine races? **giggles**

We're basically the same age then. I got out of those parts in 1987 and haven't looked back. I moved to Atlanta in 1990 but went to college before. Don't remember any submarine races, or we didn't call them that one. You have me intriqued, what did they consist of?

I did plenty of racing up and down the River Road, I did plenty of swimming in the bluff caves, but submarine races isn't ringing a bell.

                  Re: Where are you from?

Ok, submarine races....hmm, it is going parking with your boyfriend (think about it, submarines are under the water, you couldn't see them "race"). I am 34 (35 in Oct). I never got to go swimming in the bluff caves (partially because I wasn't allowed out and partially because I would have been too scared to, heard of too many people that drowned). Did you swim in the Blue Pool? I heard that was bottomless.

                    Re: Where are you from?

Parking in Rock Springs Park, yup... Parking in Elsah, Grafton all of that yup... but we called it parking. My 35th birthday is in October too- the 10th actually. And yes, I had to sneak to go swimming in Blue Pool, but yeah I did it.

For those of you who don't know what we're talking about: It was simply beautiful in that cave, there was a natural light source, but you could never climb up the bluff high enough to reach it which made it eery. You could climb high enough on the cliff walls to get to a landing and make a pretty dive, but you never touched the bottom. Rumor had it, that the cave itself was a rock quarry and blasting one day blasted water and a connection to the Mississippi River and it immediately filled up. Thereby drowning the workers, the trains they used to transport the rock from the quarry, everything. But this was YEARS ago. Thus making it bottomless. Having swam in it... I can attest to the fact that we tried to go to the bottom, diving and pushing ourselves deeper and deeper, but I never discovered the bottom and I was an excellent swimmer back then. It was posted keepout, the army corp of engineers built giant fences, around the entrance, and fortified the entrance, but as teenagers- where there is a will there is a way. There were drownings there too but it was kinda a rite of passage from the area.

We took opposite paths - I grew up in the SF bay area and have been in Japan about 8 years now, although I'm ready to head back asap.

I was born in a far far land and moved to the US when I was 13. Its weird when I think about my childhood because I still remember everything...it actually feels like a dream because it was so different than my life in the US.

Anyway, I'm from Orange County, CA

They tried to fill up the Blue Pool when my mother was young. They kept putting in old cars and they couldn't get it filled up. I never heard the story about the rock quarry/blasting thing.
