  • My Favorite Site

Guys and gals, just want you to know, savingadvice.com is my all time favorite site (is it a blog?)

Intelligent conversation that's interesting and useful.
    And everyone's pretty friendly.

Thanks to all for making this such a success.

Fern, I agree with you. I spend more time on this site than anywhere else on the internet. And I enjoy talking with all of you good people.

      Re: My Favorite Site

It's always great to hear comments like that - especially when we haven't been able to put in the time we've wanted over the last few months. We are beginning to pick up speed and I will be spending more and more time improving area content of the site.

What I've discovered (and which both of you have hit upon) is that the members here are down to earth and extremely helpful when it comes to people seeking advice on saving money and their personal finances. As we continue to grow, that is something that both Nate and I will work hard on maintaining. Thanks for the great compliments

I concur with my fellow posters. I've been on a few finance related sites and this is probably the best discussion forum out there. Great work Jeffrey

I have been telling others about the site. I agree, the people here are nice and helpful. I have learned alot from others. One nice thing is the variety of people and careers. I would like to see a private chat room added - for example: the person with the spouse with hypertension, this way we could privately speak in the chat room without disclosing our email addresses. We have varied experiences and sometimes a confidential conversation may be warranted. Our varied professions can be instrumental in changing someones life or even saving a life.

What I like is that whether you are just beginning to learn how to save or know a lot, there is a place here for you. So many sites I visit are geared toward a specific group and not the wide range. The site is very inclusive.

                    Re: My Favorite Site

This is really one of the very few sites where i do feel it's a real "community." I have been to other sites that appeared promising, but from the sarcastic or useless/empty comments sometimes posted, it appeared there were many 14 year olds frequenting the site.

This site somehow seems to attract those who are genuinely interested in learning or helping others and yes, it is interesting what a variety of backgrounds there are here.

                      One more thing:

I do think it's important for Jeffrey to "keep out the riff raff" (my apologies for offending anyone) from the site, becus, while most of us are using anonymous names to preserve our identiies, the more "safe" and comfortable people feel to reveal some personal details from time to time, the more interesting and informative this site will be.

Anecdotal information is always very interesting and helpful; if everyone just spoke in general terms, it would be so boring.

                        Re: My Favorite Site

Sometimes another persons views can stimulate us to think differently. I like to hear what others have to say, even if I do not agree. Reasons: they may have a knowledge deficit and I can teach (if God gives you knowledge he expects you to share), the person may have a different background and I can learn culture, perhaps their ideas are better than mine if I reflect on the thoughts. I love how I can be on this site talking to you and my email flags me with someones response. This is truly an interactive site. Yes, I like the people and I may not agree with all, but I want to hear from everyone. It is the poor and underpriveldged that can teach us so much - how to save, because they do it every day as a struggle. We need to open our arms to all - that is what diversity is about. I still prefer my idea of a private chat room to go into that does not allow a tracing back to the people communicating for safey reasons.

                          Re: My Favorite Site

pennywise - I will talk to Nate about a chat room. I know that the free ones have a lot of ads and are just plain annoying. I donIt know how much a good one costs, but will look into it.

Fern - Besides peopel coming in to post their affiliate links or pyramid schemes, I haven't had to do much work in regard to members. I think I have warned a single user about appropriate behavior in the forums the entire time we have been up (knock on wood). I find that if you keep a lot of the spam out, then spammers know their posts will be gone in minutes so it isn't worth their time to post here. I also am much appreciative to the volunteer moderators that also get a lot of that junk off the site right away...I would be spending a better part of a day doing it if they weren't willing to help.

I also think that a lot of people hear came from word of mouth or through a link being recommended by others. That and google searches which are people looking for the information being provided here. When people see other threads for people asking for help and info and getting sound advice and different opinions without blame (I think that is a major issue with people trying to get out of debt - people asking "how could you have done that in the first place?" whereas I have never seen that here - the focus is on improving for the future and not the past), they feel it's a good place to gather information.

                            True.

I especially appreciate all our normal conversations. A recent surf of financial boards showed they contained postings of pseudo-financial intellectuals...those who enjoyed posting yet not saying anything. I like our members grass roots approach to posting

I like how there can be many differing opinions, yet no name calling or stuff that eventually permeates every thread...that's very nice.
