  • What good thing to help others did you do today?

I was walking down to the local shopping center yesterday when I saw a shoe in the middle of the road. It wouldn't usually be a big deal except it was apparent that the cars driving down the street weren't realising that it was a shoe and were swerving to miss it. The erratic driving looked to me like it was going to cause an accident. So I waited for the traffic to lighten up, ran into the road and grab the shoe and threw it to the side so it was not an issue for the drivers anymore.

It seems to me that lately people have been a lot more stressed out and I assume a lot of that has to do with current economic conditions. I also know that it is usually simple things that can change the course of someone's day and rarely do they cost any money. Opening a door for somone, helping to pick up items that someone has dropped or letting somone go ahead of you.

I'd love to hear what other simple, no cost actions that people do/have done to help others so that I can add them to my list of ways to help others.

Went to visit the mother of a friend. She has been stuck at home in a wheelchair for a couple months. She's a very social person, so not being able to get up & go has been hard on her, besides the health problems. It was a fun visit and I'll do it again.

I was at a jamba juice store and this lady with a baby in one hand and a toddler in the other dropped her change purse and the coins went flying all over the place. I couldn't believe that everyone just stood there watching and I was the only one to help.

Well, may I add what some have done for me lately? I'm starting this new garden on a very visible neighborhood corner. People see that I am using lawn clippings to sheet compost to enrich the beds. Some people have been dropping off their clippings exactly where I need them. It is so neat to walk out in the morning and see their has been another delivery. I'm starting to think of it as my "stone soup" garden because one way or another people just keep bringing me exactly what the garden needs exactly when it is needed.

The best way to make someone's day is to compliment them.

If you are in an elevator with someone and think their necklace is cool, say it! Usually the person will start talking about the item you like- where they got it, how much it was, what else the store has... It is a great way to break the ice and end that awkward silence.

I smiled at people, spoke to them, welcomed new neighbors to the area, and paid my tithes and offerings

WHen I was walking to my office building from parking spot, I found a metal piece which can cause a flat tire. I just cleared it out which isn't a big deal but may a biggie for a person who might have got a flat tire.

I think removing the metal shards from the road is an awesome way to help out. I don't know how many times I've had to tap into savings or adjust the budget so I can take care of an unexpected flat tire.

I helped out yesterday by fixing several issues with Bill Tracker and releasing version 1.5. It's open source, so it's free for everyone. Hopefully this will help others save money.

I let the person behind me go first through the check out. She seemed in a hurry and didn't have a lot of stuff so it seemed the right thing to do.

I was at the grocery store today and there were shopping carts all over the place with many of them blocking parking spaces making the parking lot more crowded than it really should have been. I took an extra 5 minutes to gather up a bunch and free up parking spaces and get the carts out of the way where they could scratch someone's car.

Sat I was in one of my grocery stores. Woman was going through the mark down veggie/salad stuff in a cart. I shddowed her where there was more in the cooler & she found 2 more items she wanted at 50% off.

Tried to give an older (and I am 60+) man a coupon for ketchup but I did not have the "right" brand. Sorry, I cannot be so brand specific and WTF was he doing buying it this week when everybody & his 4th cousin had it on sale last week for the holiday. Do NOT understand people like this.
