  • Anyone Still Throwing the Carriage?

The other day I was in an office supply store. I was surprised to see new typewriters on display, and they weren't cheap. I wonder who still buys these relics. I thought they went the way of adding machines and comptometers (Does any one remember those?) when desktop computers and calculators became available.

On the other hand, maybe I'm dead wrong in assuming that nobody types anymore. After all, typewrites wouldn't be in stores if nobody is buying them. So do any FF members still purchase or use them?

NPR recently had some stories on typewriters. Here is one of them.
People are also buying the old ones as collector's items.

The only reason I can think of to use a typewriter (besides the sensory appeal) is for filling out printed forms. If you do a lot of work that involves those, especially if they are carbonless copy type of forms, a computer doesn't do you much good. You could scan the form into the computer and fill it out that way, but that's a pain.

I occasionally have used my old one when a deadline was very near and I needed a typed document at just that moment and my computer(my former one) decided to have uncooperative day. I hope those days are behind me but my trusty old former state of the art typewriter sits on a shelf ready to go.

At my former company we used a typewriter quite a bit. Mainly for printed forms, but also for when you just had a few envelopes to address, so using labels would be more of a pain.

It was so funny when this young 23 year old started working the - he had never used a typewriter.

I remember staying up a good portion of the night typing a paper my sophmore year of college on my nifty electric typewriter. I loved that thing because I didn't have to use those correction tapes.

I wonder what the kid would've thought if our company's typewriter needed the manual correction tapes? LOL
