  • Website Blockers

I have a 13 year old son and find it's time to put some restrictions on the internet.

Anyone know of a good site blocker? I find if I use the one built into internet explorer, and I say no access to any unrated site, I have to give myself permission to go everywhere. I can't even access the weather and it's pretty annoying. Seems when I do anything less than "no access to any unrated site" I can still access undesirable sites with no problem.

    Help???

I've heard a lot people have had good results with BSafe.com. I've never had to use it myself, but will do so in 12 1/2 years

      Re: Website Blockers

BSafe costs $50 bucks a year and extra money is something I don't have right now. I've removed all computer access for this boy until further notice (probably not until September, when he'll need it for school again.)

In the mean-time, I've looked into the "rating system" and have had trouble downloading this. Seems like no site has a rating on it unless you're able to download this rating system. I have to type a password in to get to any website. (kind of a pain)

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

      Thanks so much!

        Re: Website Blockers

When I was a teen my mother tried the traditional routes, seems my bro was a better hacker than any other site she found for free. (tho this was a while ago)

So she gave up, and so did he. Seems once she took the challenge out there was no more need for him to hunt around, dunno about your kid, but I know my DS will be the same way, a lock is a challenge not a deterent.

        I of course never hacked

Dh is a computer wizz and we will be locking some of his computer off limits (they are networked) but it will be as a reminder not a deterent, the real deterent is me telling DS not to go in our room when the door is shut, I hope it will work when he is a teen for the computer, I wont read his online stuff if he doesn't mess with mine, assuming he gives no sign I need to of course)

But I know I do not like searching cause some rather innocent queries bring up some things I do not want to see myself. (though thankfully you can read the mini discriptions and only read not see stuff) maybe you could google a parent search engine, if there is one then the only way for bad stuff to crop up is if your teen is activly searching it out.

Oh and learn to read the history if you want to know where he has been (sorry I don't know how on IE) If DH or you ever goes where DS shouldn't follow, learn to clear the history! you would be amazed at what crops up on other peoples computers!

Hi Singing. (Love the screen name.)
For user-rated freeware and shareware, go to www.webattack.com. This is my source for freeware! I got Spybot, SpywareBlaster, Adaware, and a few other free programs through this site. Never a single problem.

Click the little 'Freeware' tab'. You'll see a big menu of categories. The one you'll want is Browser Tools> Child Safe Internet, or perhaps Web Content Filter.

I have not had the need to use any of these, as I have no kids, but it might start you in the right direction.

If you use a router you can also limit when his computer can be connected to the internet. Just make sure you have a good password.

try this site http://www.familyschoice.com/free/freefilters.htm as it has soem free filters. some will have free trials. can you move the pc into the living room where he has no choice but to be online in front of you instead of in his room?

here is another place to check out. http://www.contentpurity.com/

either way all of them will do some job.
