    Re: Working overtime

Hmmm. Overtime. Funny, I've rarely gotten overtime. I've usually been on salary or stipend.
But I can imagine that overtime has a double advantage - not only do you get more money, you also have less time or temptation to spend the check.
Me-too on the burnout, but it looks like DH better be on board, too. You don't want to be working overtime and then a third shift at home.
Finally, do you have an exit strategy? If you do get burned out or your situation changes can you stop working overtime?

      Re: Working overtime

Your lucky you can do the overtime. Where I work, it has to be offered in order of seniority. If you work it without going thru the right channels, first, they don't pay you for it. But on the flip side, seems like everytime I have something planned, the company forces mandatory overtime on you. When its mandatory, you must work it, or else you get written up for it...

        Re: Working overtime

I am so upset, I know there are days coming up when the other waitresses at work need time off and I would love to work it and make the extra money, but DH is working out of town and it is just me and Christina here and I can't find anyone to watch her so I can't do it. Always something in the way it seems like.

Wish I could get overtime. I am salaried as well. At least this new gig is not to bad though. The last department I was in I worked consistently 7-6 or 7-7 mon through friday. Here I have pretty easy days and then before big meetings I work crazy hours. I was here till 3 in the morning one night before the board meeting. At least I get a bonus. And my boss gives us comp time for when we do that. This vacation next week is not even eating into my normal vacation as I rolled 5 days over from last year and still ahve 2 (or is it 3) comp days left.

              Re: Working overtime

I am eligible for OT, but need to get it approved. Seeing how busy I have been, it's pretty flexible in that area (they've never turned me down). But it's also a pain - since it's so busy, I do enjoy the time I have off, plus, our work week counts as 37.5 hours. I am paid salary, so I have to work 2 1/2 extra hours to reach 40 hours... and if I happened to take a day off within the workweek, even though I used 'my' time, I would still have to 'make up' that time until I was back at the 40 hour mark. It can definitely be good, don't get me wrong - my OT rate is a little above $30/hr. It's just not worth it sometimes, when you consider all the time you already put into work and being stressed out. Weekends of mind numbing nothingness are a welcome distraction until Mondays

                Re: Working overtime

I'm salaried as well, but we are not encouraged to put in OT. My boss believes that at 5:00 its time to get on with they business of living your life.

So, to earn extra money, I'm looking at outside options - the second job. I've finally found one and hope to start this weekend. I'm also looking into doing some on-line surveys from home. I've got a goal to pay off a cc by Nov and am eager to pay it off before then.

I also got a 2nd job, it was PERFECT for me. I worked at a call center that had an onsite employment agency. I technically worked for the agency, and was there in the evening just to be sure if someone needed to be let go, or if something happened, I was there to handle it. I had the easy job of documenting employees' files, whether they were late, out, etc. and setting them up with computer access... sigh. I had to give it up because I am on medical leave, but hopefully i'll be able to go back. It gave me an extra $200 a week for doing almost nothing...and I still was home by 9-9:30.
