Anyone see 20/20 last night? 9/10/08

20/20 did a special last night (9/10) on privilege in America. They focused on a couple of different things: race issues and how whites have an easier time than blacks simply because they are white; how political diplomats get away with crimes because of diplomatic immunity; how celebrities get special treatment simply because they are celebrities.

The other segment, which tied in with my thread about it being okay to spend money, was on the ultra-wealthy and how they live and spend. They talked about them having people they pay to shop for them or arrange vacations or parties. They said a party could cost from $6,000 to $50,000 PER GUEST. Considering we just had a thread about how $70/person was too much for a wedding reception, I thought folks here would appreciate that. They also talked about jewelry, yachts, private chefs and more. Very interesting.

They live in a whole different world. I wonder what would happen if they were forced to live like working people. Can you go from such wasteful extravagance to actually having to pay attention to what you buy.

I think the ones who started out "normal" would be okay. The ones who were born into opulence, though, might have a tough time adjusting.

I think the one's that worked there way to riches are probably less likely to do these things. If you get all this stuff from birth I doubt that you'd ever be able to adjust

I work at night, so I don't see prime time TV anymore. But if you want to know what's on at 3:30 am EST, I have that schedule memorized.

Anyways one time I did see a show on the rise and fall of celebrities (like Britney Spears) and how this money, party and fame robs them of adolescence. The acting out we see from a 23 something year old is because that person could not do the acting out when they were 12.

Thank god NFL network has 24/7 programming. ESPN gets boring if you watch ESPN news for more than 30 minutes and sports center at 3am and sportcenter at 8am are the same thing. Kids sleep from 10pm to 3am (or 4 am some nights) so maybe somebody will move 20/20 to late night for me?

I can't speak from experience since I don't have it but what you need is on-demand cable service that lets you watch whatever you want whenever you want.

Either that, or just log on to fancast.com or hulu.com when you want to watch something other than infomercials in the middle of the night. You won't get the most current stuff but you'll have plenty of selection of things to watch.

Not knocking Tivo, but what's wrong with a normal old VCR? They are cheap and effective. We record shows regularly and watch them later.

Those folks wouldn't hnow how survive the way common people lives and wouldn't know how to live a normal life either.

tapes are pain to keep. And only record so many hours!

We have 3 TVs in the house and a DVR connected downstairs. We generally keep the twins upstairs during the week- we have an open bonus room with a TV, but no DVR. During the week we are usually home alone with the kids, or if both spouses are home one of us is sleeping- so keeping twins on one floor (upstairs) keeps them close to changing table, crib, play area and TV.

Long story made short- we wanted a DVR in the bonus room and paid to have one delivered when we moved in, but were then informed the DVR needed 2 coax lines and we were not going to drill through the new house to add the second coax line. So we returned the second DVR.

Getting a DVD player for upstairs is probably on the agenda, though.

I have a DVD recorder that works good for this. Big space saver over having VCR tapes everywhere. Recording quality is superior as well.

FIOS verizon which I have has a multi-room DVR. Works great upstairs. Something to consider. Can't recall what you have.
