  • Was this a good price for movie tickets?

The other day DW and I went to the movies for the first time in the three years that we've been living here in the Philippines and for about 3 years before that as well. So we were rather out of touch with ticket prices.

The venue was a nice, first run theatre with selected comfortable stadium seating, good sound system, even usher escorts. (The movie was "Mama Mia" which has only been playing here for about 2 weeks).

Seats were the equivalent of only about $3.20 each. The showing that we attended was on a week-day afternoon (for some reason there was no evening show for this feature that day.) Is this comparable to ticket prices for a similar setting in the U.S. these days?

Yes that is comparable to weekday afternoon shows here in the US. I was at the movies 2 weeks ago in jacksonville florida and it only cost $5.

The later showing of movies is a different story. They're $7 and up.

From what I've heard about mamma mia, they should have paid you to see that movie.

That was a good price. Tickests around here (for adults) are $8.75 movie after 4pm and I think around $6 for afternoon showings before 4.

My wife took our kids to a free movie on Tues. a.m. once/week during the summer.

However, it was packed. Busloads of kids got off to see it.

Wehrenberg theatres in Missouri also offer free movies on Wed/Thurs mornings (2 showings) in the summer only. They show only G and some PG kid and family movies. Of course there were lots of little kids (and talking/crying), but I was really surprised to see the number of retired adults with no kids/grandkids there in the theatre considering it was a Veggie Tales (cartoon). I guess free entertainment is hard to beat!

Tix in the NYC area (excluding Manhattan) are $10-11 for first run non-matinee showings.

I buy discount tickets from AAA and pay between $5-7 after the first two weeks.

Adult admission to the best theatre here is $11 at any time! I think even the discount theatres would probably be at least $5 or $6 for matinees. I'm in Canada though, and things tend to cost more here.

ETA: I just checked out of curiosity and the matinees at the less expensive theatres are still $8.50-$9. Wow. That's Mon-Thurs. I think the charge full price on the weekend.
