  • The $100 tank of gas

Well, it finally happened today. For the first time ever, I ended up paying over $100 for a tank of gas. I'm sure people with bigger cars (and bigger gas tanks) have already experienced this, but for my smaller fuel efficient car, it was quite a shock. Granted, it was not at my typical gas station but while traveling over the weekend at a gas station that seemed overpriced even with the high prices of today. It's a sad milestone to have reached.

How much per gallon? I think my last fill up cost $47 at $3.98/gal.

At $7 a gallon in Japan, we have had $100 fill-ups for a long time. It's another reason why I love the efficient public transportation system.

Did they give you any kind of a bonus for making such a big purchase?

Ha. I just filled up our swather with diesel fuel yesterday. It still had 3/8 of a tank of fuel, and we still spent > $300. Annoying part, other than how much it cost, is that my credit card kept shutting off at $74. So I had to swipe it 5 times to fill it up.

It costs me up to $40 for a half tank. I'm happy I just moved to NYC. I won't be driving for a little while

This is a very annoying problem, but it doesn't only deal with your card. The big credit companies tell the gas stations that they will only reimburse the store $75 for outside gas purchases. The reason being that if I were to steal a credit card and run up a $150 tab in gas prices, the credit company is only going to reimburse the store $75 and the store would be out the other $75. So, stores put limits on the pumps in order to make sure that no one gets more than $75 at a time, therefore making sure they get reimbursed if there's a problem.

I had no clue about this until I read a new article about how the credit companies were trying to figure out how much, if any, they were going to raise the max. reimbursement rate in the wake of increasing gas prices.

It is ONLY 3.90 here in Omaha.
My DH decided to start taking the bus to work due to high gas prices, which saves us around $150 a month in gas money!! Also saves on the wear and tear of the car!
