  • Newbi: Book Advice

If I'm not in the correct forum, holler out and I'll switch. Thanks.

I’d like some book recommendations, or any other for that matter regarding personal finances. Not sure where to start so I will give it my best shot.

I’m 47, married with three girls all under 12. I am about to start a new job in a few weeks making about $110k. I live in MD, upper middle class, have a home I am paying off and some debt.

Currently I have a 401k with my old employer. I have not invested for my girl’s future which I feel bad about. I need to get that going ASAP. I need to get out of debt. My wife wants to move. I bought a new car.

Where do I start? A book or investment group to contact?

Thanks for your help. I’m good at making money and spending it. I don’t get all the in-between and have great anxiety dealing with money matters which is why I want to read a book so I can pick a good company to help me.

    THANK YOU!

I'm going through Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover and really like it. Especially if you really take is seriously. Good stuff!

All Your Worth by Elizabeth Warren -- good guidelines if you have just a little bit of credit card debt, probably not the best if you're very deeply in debt.

                I personally liked
Saving For Retirement (without living like a pauper or winning the lottery)
                by
                Gail MarksJarvis

Being a newbie here, not sure what others thought of her book, but it was the book that got me thinking seriously about my retirement and gave me the tools to take charge of it. I found her explanations of the terms very easy to understand and her explanations of stocks/bonds and how to choose very helpful.

                Good luck!

edited to note--just realized this was in general, I read your post as seeking retirement advice due to the 401k question. So for retirement funding, I think this is a good book

I recommend Investing for Dummies and Personal Finance for Dummies, all by Eric Tyson.
