I live in a larger metro area. Our town has had recycling for >10 years. We do not pay any extra for it. The charge(s) are part of our municipal services real estate taxes.

Personally, I do NOT think my town has EVER made a very good deal. I think we should be getting paid (town or individually) for doing this.

      Wow! That sounds great!

We live a rural area, we have to take our recyclables to the highway garage. Most of the people around us don't recycle because they don't want to mess with taking it in. I know a program like that would make a huge difference!

Wow, this sounds like a great program. We have curbside service, but we also have to pay and boy are they picky...they only take plastics 1 & 2 and only clear glass, no colored glass bottles. And everything has to be in paper bags, not plastic ones.

I'm saddened in this day and age to hear how many of you live places where recycling is not provided and encouraged by the municipality. That's really a disgrace. You guys should all be flooding your city and county officials with letters demanding a recycling program. Our town has always encouraged us to recycle and the mayor's reports in the local paper periodically detail how many millions of dollars have been saved through the recycling program. When they started RecycleBank in one neighborhood as a pilot program, the recycling rate there went up 90%, and it was already pretty high. If we see those kinds of increases once the whole town participates later this month, the town will save millions.

Sounds like a neat program. I sure would be interested if it ever comes to my area. We recycle...it is included with our local trash pickup. We pay
            $6/month for both services.

Now, if we could get the can and bottle tax repealed and get paid to recycle those at the curb...I'd be so thrilled! Such a mess to take cans back to the store.

In our former town, we lived outside the city limits to had to hire a private hauler for trash. Many would not include the recycling in the same fee. As a result, people chose not to recycle to save on their trash bill.

The state is proposing (again) a deposit on cans and bottles. Our town is furious since they make so much money from their own recycling program and are in the process of rolling out the new plan. If the state passes the deposit, our town will lose tons of money because people will stop participating in the curbside recycling program in order to get their deposits back.

Well, maybe this story will get folks on the recycling bandwagon even if the local pickups don't pay:

The recycle here, free, but most folks still dont do it!

I wish we had a credit program, especially since they don't recycle at the church, so I often bring home the inserts, misc paperwork and the like. plus bottles and cans.

I hate throwing away something that is so easy to recycle.

My brother in law lives where only certain things are recycled, an he has decided to try taking all his cans in to see if he makes money....at the same time as he decided to reduce his pop drinking....

[QUOTE=herm4;171124]YES!! We started this 2 months ago. I love it. We always recycled but this has made us SUPER recyclers. [QUOTE]

We just got our recyclebank bin about a month ago and it has made me a recycling feind! We have to pay $8 a month for the service, though. We come out slightly ahead each month, but even if we didn't it would be worth it to me because it accepts more types of plastics than our public drop-off does.

I've heard of recyclebank before, hopefully it spreads to Northern NJ since I'm a huge recycler.

I just recently moved from south central PA where we had trash pickup 1x per week and it included recyclables. Here in Northern NJ I have a trash pickup 4 days per week! One day for yard waste, 2 days for trash and one day for recycling (alternating weeks - one week paper, one week plastics/glass). This is the most ridiculous thing I've seen in a long time! This is such a waste of fuel and wear/tear on the roads. I'm really perplexed as to why someone would need trash picked up on both Tuesday and Friday, I think it just encourages people to be more wasteful.
