While it costs the mint three pennies to make a penny, it's still money.
I think it still costs the mint less than a penny to make a penny:
#7) "The penny produces a profit for the Treasury. Seigniorage, the revenue derived from the difference between the face value of coins and the cost of their mintage, produced more than $25 million for the Treasury last year -- from the penny alone"
I always pick up change, pennies or otherwise. As far the germs go, I have heard that most germs require human contact to live so while there may be dirt on them probably not too much danger. Besides do you have any idea how much touching there is of paper money!!!?? Yet no one here would balk at the idea of picking up a $1 or a $20. And to address the superstition: I always say the little rhyme when I pick it up and if it is heads down I flip it over first and then say the rhyme and pick it up! I know I am a little weird.
If it takes 3 sec to pick up 0.01, that's 0.20/ minute or $12/hr.
Cool. I'll work for 12 an hour.
I've always picked them up out of my own superstitious fear that if I reject small offerings then whatever power is out there won't send any big offerings. So if I don't pick up pennies, our office pool won't win the lottery, or I won't inherit a bundle from a long-lost relative, or I'll never write that bestseller, or that stock I just bought won't go through the roof, or whatever.
Silly, I guess, but still, 12 an hour is pretty good, and it's tax free!
I used to always pick up and money I found on the ground, including once stopping the car to pick up $14 I found on the road. Now with a cane, I don't bend over for pennies, But I would certainly try for larger money! My son picks up spare change all the time. I have one kid that is frugal, and one that spends all he makes.
i almost always do but i'm obsessive-compulsive lol. also, there are times i'm not in the mood like on a crowded bus or something... otherwise.. yeah... saving is saving
