  • Are your bookshelves safe?

For the last couple years I have been grumbling about putting up bookcases or book shelves on w-t-w carpeting because that edge-tacking tends to tilt them out from the wall. So this time, when I was upgrading my bookcases (Ikea is pretty cool), I bought some fur stripping from Home Depot to put down under the front of the shelves so they tip back towards the wall. We live in Seattle so I also attached the shelves to studs - no point in surviving an earthquake only to die under a book avalanche.

When I sold my old cases to a young grad student and her husband, they came over with their young child -- I brought them into the house to show them what I did because young kids are climbers. If your bookcases are not built in, make sure they are attached to the wall!

We had an emergency room bill because CashHappySon decided to climb the bookcase in their room once when he was about 4. Attach them to the wall!

Him? He's fine, except for that big scar on his lilol'beany head! He's always been an adventurer!!

Scared the beejeebee's out of me at the time though!

While we have a LOT of books, most are in shelves mounted on the walls above kid height..not on the floor, clears floor space for dressers and the like, while leaving some books (especially mine) out of reach of kids. (trust me they have plenty in reach as well)
