  • What Would You Do?

If tomorrow you somehow became wealthy enough to retire, what exactly would you do? For arguments sake, let's not say you won 50 million in the lottery or something like that - that would probably change a lot of things. I am saying more along the lines of you have enough money to live (100% of your income) the lifestyle you currently have and not run out of money. Heck, we'll even wipe out any debt you have. We all seem to be at different stages in our life, so what exactly would you do?

I'll start. I have always been the responsible one. I would never have back-packed across Europe or put off college to do something that I might never get the chance to do again. So, I think I would do a few of those things. But, I have a little one now, so my frivilous, non-responsible, non-frugal thing might be a long family vacation. After that, I would take a couple months to get back in shape. I am not out of shape exactly, but I think I would want to start my retired life feeling good and think that if I could have a couple weeks or months of not working, but rather working out, then I would feel great (at least that's what I tell myself now:-)). At that time, I am sure I would get bored and would want to try a new career. Seeing as I don't necessarily need the income, I would probably start some sort of new career. Don't know what that woudl be yet.

I'd put my notice in and plan a vacation while working my last two weeks.

Good question. We've probably all fantasized about winning the lottery and having oodles of money, but not thought so much about just having enough to maintain things status quo.

I agree with you about exercise. That is something that I do sporadically now and would definitely start doing regularly. I'd probably join a gym where I could swim regularly.

Despite all my posts about travel, we probably wouldn't travel a whole lot more since we still have a school-aged child. I guess we might start traveling during her breaks, which we don't currently do.

As soon as the weather got nice enough, I'd attack our garage. That would probably take the better part of a week to seriously get it cleaned out and organized. Then 2-3 yard sales in the spring to unload stuff.

I would cancel the lawncare guy and start mowing my own lawn again.

I would cook dinner much more regularly. I'd also cook more stuff in large batches to freeze for later.

I'd start taking advantage of some of the comp offers and frequent mid-week promotions that I get from the casinos in Atlantic City. Every month, we can spend at least 4 nights free but never get to do it because it is only good Sunday-Thursday when I'm busy working.

I'd do more ebay business. I'd also start visiting local antique shops and attending auctions again, something I haven't done for a while.

I'd also do more at my synagogue. I currently run the library but really don't devote the time it deserves so I'd like to be free to do more there.

Let's stop there for now. Can you tell I'm one of those people who won't be bored in retirement?

I don't think I would be either. I have a lot of hobbies that I dabble in that I would love to spend the time doing more often. I just don't seem to have the time now than to do any more than dabble. I am someone that no matter what I am doing I want to do it well. I also like to learn and take lessons, such as gold or photography. So, I would love to have the time to invest in some of those things. Oh, and maybe I could get those pictures hung that my wife has been nagging me about for the last few weeks. I guess I wouldn't have any more "time" excuses.

I would go see America, however long it takes to do it right. Then I would go to college, I've always wanted to get a degree. I would like to go on a missions trip, somewhere safe. Instead of getting up at 6 and rushing to work, I'd like to set and read a book with my coffee.

I've discussed with my employee's many times, what would we do if we won the lottery. Every once in a while I'll buy a ticket just to make the dreams real. I think it is cheap theropy.

          Nice thread snave.

After depositing that check, I would renovate my home a little. I have no interest in buying a new home, just update the one I have. I would keep the same cars, just pay them off. Actually now that I think of it, my SUV is a gas guzzeler, so I would trade it it for something a little smaller. I would install a pool and landscape my property. I would put all my bills on direct pay, so than I would not have to worry about writing those checks every month.

I would trade in my tow camper for an RV, and travel the US. I would not work for someone else, I would just work on finding myself again. Some of us mom's tend to loose ourselfs in the midst of child rearing. And I am one of them.

I would buy 3 homes, one for each person in our family and of coarse new cars for them too. I would give them money so they too can enjoy the freedom of just living to love life.

I would also purchase a vacation home, on Lake Winnipesaukee.

If the Lottery Gods are reading this, pick me.....

Now you got us wondering who is deserving. Can I be the first to get the check or the whip?

Me too. I think we'd quite our 'Day jobs' and start a business. What sort? No idea, but it's a chance I'd love, love, love to take. And DH would be thrilled.

                          Hit the Quote button.

If we could retire right now, man, it makes me cry just to think about it! All that time with my husband! I would loooove it. I think we would move somewhere that our property taxes weren't so high, in a safer neighborhood with better schools and a little more yard. We would spend our time gardening and driving around to nurseries. We would take our daughter places that she would enjoy. We would go away for weekends more often, because we would have the free time since we'd done all our errands during the week.
