Geesh, we homeschool and we spend about $2000 a year on the boys' education. That $2000 includes all their activities (bowling, rollerskating, fieldtrips, swimming, park days, science classes, an indoor playstructure place, etc), their curriclum, and gas for the car to take them to their activities.

As a teacher I agree -- most of the companies doing these fundraisers are drastically overpriced junk. Any school I worked at was delighted if parents would be kind enough to just donate money, but most parents won't do that...so it's often a necessary evil. We have had problems where kids sell stuff and go to collect and either the people won't pay or the kids don't bring the money back.

I truly resent the people who push these fundraiser catalogs on others. I've had kids in my neighborhood whom I don't know ring my doorbell and want me to buy. I'm uncomfortable with that because that puts the kids at risk.
