5 reasons I won't be buying an iPhone

Is it just me, or do other people look at these things and think "who cares?" I do not get giddy when I see new technology. I think the iPhone looks cool, but I just have a basic Tracfone and I don't want to change that. Sometimes I think I've fallen out of the world somewhat when it comes to upgrading the technological things that I have.

I'm right there with you. I like technology. Can't imagine how I lived without the internet. But I'm not upgrade happy. It was a REALLY big deal last month for us to upgrade DW's cell phone for no particular reason. That was totally unlike us. We actually made it her mother's day present to justify the purchase to ourselves. Other than that, we buy what we need and keep it until it dies. We have a 25-inch conventional tv that is 10 or 12 years old, our desktop computer is 5 or 6 years old. Heck, my car is 10 years old. And we've been in our house over 13 years.

When we finally broke down and bought iPods last year, we ordered refurbs direct from Apple for about $50 each less than the current model is selling for.

I think marketers have people so brainwashed that they need to have the newest, biggest and best of everything, that is why so many people are overextended financially.

I'm not gonna lie. The iPhone is hot gadget sex to me.

However, there's no way that I'll buy one.

The iPhone actually doesn't do anything that other smartphones-- including mine!-- can't do. (Well, except maybe YouTube, but that's not a deal breaker to me.) It just does it with a lot more flash and sex appeal than anything before it. Truly, it has Steve Job's signature user experience written all over it, and I certainly applaud them for their innovation and their ability to woo the consumer mainstream.

But I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

I hate phones. I wouldn't have a cell phone if it was free forever. I don't even know what you all are talking about. I didn't even get a touch tone phone til I moved into this house.

Ima: I felt like you but when you're traveling they can come in handy if your car breaks down. I got mine 4 years ago when I was traveling back and forth to my mom's to help out with her medical problems.

If a stranger were to walk up to you and you had a cell phone and talking, they would think twice about trying to attack you.

It has saved me money when I'm at a store and had to call home about an item or my husband has called me about something that I needed to buy. It has saved me my time of going back to the store, walking back to the store and going into another line, and lastly - saving gas.

The cell phone has its place and I have a pay-as-you-go plan that serves me well when I need it. I don't have a monthly plan.

Aleta, my husband does have one. He uses it when he is on the jobsite to order material, so I agree they can come in handy. We do take it when we travel. I just am not a "phone" person and I hardly ever use one.

#1 reason I won't be buying an iPhone: We'd have to hike about 1/4 mile up a hill to get to a place where we'd get reception.

Kind of kills the convenience factor of cell phones...

Well, thankfully you guys come from a population that Apple probably isn't targeting too much (frugal, you know).

I definitely won't be buying the first iteration, for reasons that Steve mentions (though Apple does do better than pretty much anyone when it comes to doing things right the first time).

I would take issue to it doing things that any other smartphone can do. I think they have some tricks up their sleeve.

Being a shareholder, I hope it takes off like a rocket and is the iPod for cellphones. My 17-year old cousin wants one very badly -- I was happy to hear that she did!

On the news today they say that the service will cost you about $60. a month with a two-2 year contract. That should put a damper on it for most people.

I also really get aggravated with people who talk publicly with their cellphones. That has to be the rudest thing I have ever seen.

Ima: I'm like you in then I'm not crazy about phones and don't want to be that connected, but they do have their place. Like you, my husband has one for his business and that's different. I don't want for a phone to own me.

We have 3 Apple desktops in our home and 1 old Apple laptop, plus 2 iPods, so we love Apple products and services. The iPhone just doesn't appeal to me. I feel a cell phone is for making phone calls and that's pretty much it. I don't need or want all the other features. I'm sure once the hub-bub dies down, I'll wander into my local AT&T store and check it out just for fun, but I really have no interest in owning one.

Aleta: You'd be surprised at how many people don't care about the cost. It doesn't come out until tomorrow, but people here are already lining up to buy one.

I love the iPhone. Won't be getting it for several reasons:

1. It's available only on AT&T. Tried the network before, didn't like it at all. For the next 5 years it will be only on AT&T.
2. It's very cool, but has too many gadgets. Honestly, all I would use it for would be to call people. And probably get directions to places.
3. The price! 'Nuff said.

We too have stock with Apple and I hope it does well.

Cassandra: I appreciate all that you are saying about how many don't care about the cost. I have a son that is always buying the latest technology. He has a friend that teaches him alot and at times when he down at our house, will download stuff for me. Wish I lived closer to him. I know that I'd learn alot more. We have the web-cam and I love it.

I am all for technology!!! As a deaf person, technology allows me to be a participant of the general population rather than cast aside.

I would not purchase the iPhone but have purchase very expensive phones in the past (Treo, PPC, Sidekick, RIM, and etc.) Being able to communicate via text messaging, emails, using the internet on the phone allows me to use the online relay, retrieve sign language messaging via online video to make me more active and involved in the public and work environment is something that would not prevent me from paying so much. Unless I was dirt broke and could not keep up with payments but definitely would find a way to do so.

But I guess I can not speak for the public as not many face the silence without the new gadget but just wanted to share how amazing technology really is.

iPhone is just not there yet for it to be a reasonable purchase.

Well, not that this is a big deal, but since I'm here....

My phone is a Treo 650. It's capable of MP3, Quicktime video, and Flash. Being a Palm (or PocketPCs for that matter), it also has lite version of Quicken or other money managers, handles word and excel documents, surfs the net, show photos, measurement conversions, games, and so on and so forth. With additional hardware, it is also capable of WiFi or showing Powerpoint presentations off of a projector. And being Palm (or PPC), it's also wide open for 3rd party developer support (which the community has had years of).

Is it sleeker than the iPhone? Does it have a better future than the iPhone? Oh heavens no. And I'm sure Apple will eventually find ways to do things with it that no other smartphones will be able to do.

But right now? Honestly, there's almost nothing that iPhone does that other smartphones are not capable of doing. The iPhone just has a much more elegant user interface.

To be sure, I really love Apple stuff, including the iPhone!

I also think that the iPhone is going to be a massive success.

There will eventually be a second iteration as the EDGE only support is really a downer. But for now, I still don't see what it does that other smartphone (or at least mine) can't do.
