  • Ripped off after cancelling an Extended Warranty

Need some advice, or possibly just need to vent.

I bought a car in August of 2006 with an extended warranty for about $1800. I decided in the end of November that I didn't want the extended warranty, so I sent my letter in with the papers and all that to cancel it and expected to get back something close to the original amount. I talked to the dealership after about a month of not hearing anything and she told me that it takes time.

Well I didn't hear anything for a while and so I checked back in around April 2007 (about 4 months later). There was a NEW business manager that I talked to and she looked into my situation and told me that the paperwork was never sent in So I had her send it in again. I look at my account and it shows that I only got $900 back.

The warranty cancellation policy said that there would be no more than a $50 cancellation fee and I would receive a prorated amount. I was still under the factory warranty mileage and had "used" only 3 months out of the 5 years that the warranty covered.

    Ugh.

I would read the fine print of the contract. If the refund is supposed to be prorated, then I would go in person and speak to the business manager with that paperwork in hand. I'm not sure, and have nothing to refer to one way or the other, but it just seems odd to me that they would let you cancel an extended warranty at any time and get a prorated refund. Let us know how this turns out.
