  • Color of CFL bulbs

Ok, so I finally got on the bandwagon of buying CFL bulbs. I have to admit though that the color from the bulbs is taking some getting used to. I've read that CFL bulbs come in a range of different colors. Has anyone seen these/tried these?

Also I have recessed lighting in various places in my house. Has anyone used the CFL reflector lamps that are supposed to work for recessed lighting?

Yeah, I don't like the fact that they're so white. Lumens are good, but it makes me feel like I'm at work and in the office.

A few things that has helped for me....

I use as low a watt/lumen as I can get away with. I find that that helps a little.

On lamps, I delibrately pick shades that would filter into a softer, orangier glow.

Finally, something that I saw at a local Italian restraunt is they've spray painted the bulbs with blue paint. I'm not sure exactly why the color blue... or why it still produces a nice candlelight orange tint. Perhaps it's the stucco/wood motif of the rest of the room... but in any case, it worked for them!

I don't care for the white CFLs. The places we've replaced incandescents, we've done so with the more yellow CFLs that match that color. I'm almost positive that all of the ones we currently have in use are from Ikea.

I like a very bright house. And I like my 5000 Kelvin compact fluorescents, brand name Damar. More expensive, but I'll be repeating the purchase. At slightly fewer lumens (20 compared to 26) than lower K ones, they feel brighter. And my blue painted walls look cleaner, the yellow haze that I feel from most compact fluorescents is lifted. However, one visitor told me it feels like the light at a doctor's office, and she did not like it. I can understand that, but I do strongly prefer it.

depends on where the lights are: some colors look better under a cool white light, others (wood, food, and people) look better under a warmer tone.

i nmy kitchen we have a ficture that takes 2 of the round flourescent lights, so we got one cool bulb and one warm bulb. makes for a very nice, natural light.
