You bet I shop there! I get a lot of stuff to use at home and at school. Just watch prices because once in awhile stuff is under a dollar somewhere else. A few times I've gotten Progresso soup for a dollar a can and been pleased as punch as it is never less than a 1.25 at any store, even on sale!

As the entertainment director for our church I often decorate for church parties, banquets, entertainments, fellowships, showers, weddings, etc. And this is where alot of the stuff comes from - they are great for small items that make nice little centerpieces, and at holiday times they are great places to spend a little and still get a lot of 'powie-punch' for the buck. IOW, a little $$ goes a long way to pulling a party together when shopping there. The nearest Dollar Tree to us is about 20 minutes away in another town but it's worth the drive. Great place to pick up stocking stuffers at Christmas-time.

For some reason I'm picky about where I buy my food from, and I never buy food from the dollar store. However, I often buy cleaning products or a big bottle of ajax for 2 bucks.

i don't buy 'food' at the dollar tree, but their candy selection is top notch! usually there's lots of sugar free candy, too, which was nice since FIL is a diabetic.

when hurricane katrina hit, i bought $100 worth of toiletries at dollar tree and donated them as soon as i walked out the door. i liked that they carried stuff most folks would think to donate but would still definitely be needed (like women's sanitary products) for a super-affordable price.

I love Dollar Tree. I buy medicines, toiletries, and the boys buy toys there. We homeschool and I have found quit a bit of educational things there.

Because of these recent dollar store threads, I decided to route my daily walk to the nearest such shop. I bought wool-like chair pads that seem to be the equivalent of 3-M brand I was buying elsewhere for nearly $4. And I bought a pair of garden gloves, leather on the palms and fingers.

I also took my time and really had a look at what was there, for next time. I generally do not like these dollar stores because so much of what they have is junk to me. But I usually do find some useful things.

Zakity, the store I was at had several toys that I would consider educational. The ones that appealed to me were the ones that I think help a kid get a hands-on feel for physics concepts. Like the Magnetics knock offs, the wind-up and pull-back friction toys, the hand-powered, geared toys that change horizontal motion into vertical motion and launch a helicopter blade which will rotate and float slowly back down, the kites, the faom glider planes.... I can't name them all. There was a lot! Then there were the chemical toys like the glowsticks, glow necklaces, glow glasses, the "blaster balls" that make a spark when you knock them together, the Silly Putty (Hey a brand name!). There were these little ball-and-stick construction toys that I used about a week ago to demonstrate electronic geometry versus molecular geometry for my adult student who was having a tough time understanding. They were kind of like Zometool (used by architects, chemists, mathematiticians), just not nearly so precise or versatile, but still good...Really for $1, I think there are some superb educational toys.

I have loved dollar stores for years. But I find that sometimes (unless I am really disciplined I will go in for 2 items and spend 10 dollars because they are "only a dollar" My favorite thing about the dollar stores though is that DS2 can use his allowance there and is learning about the value of a dollar and about saving and getting your money's worth. It is really cool.

I let the kids go in and pick out presents for each other and family members for birthdays and Christmas. Just this weekend I took my friends kids and my two and bought presents for their dad. total spent: under $10.00. that was 7 little gifts, bag and card. The look on his face when he was looking at what they picked out for him........Priceless. the fun of having people realize you were in a store with 7 children all under the age of 9 and you were by yourself..................too much fun for words.
