  • Making Maple Syrup

My grandmother mentioned to me this past Thanksgiving, that when times got tough, she used to make her own maple syrup. She boiled water with brown sugar somehow, and then mixed it with maple flavoring or syrup she already had.

Has anyone heard of this or done it themselves? I'd like to try it.

Never heard of that but, we used to regularly sprinkle brown or white sugar on our pankcakes instead of syrup. In my opinion its better that way.

Yup you have the recipe right. Although I haven't done it in so long- since I was a little girl-my great grandmother combined brown sugar, maple syrup from the tree and water and boiled it all in a saucepan. WHen it cooled she poored it in a bottle and that was our syrup. When we didn't have fresh maple sap she just did the brownsugar and water.

Great! Thanks for the confirmation. It's tidbits of information like this that should be passed down from generation to generation. Unfortunately, that doesn't always happen.
You're the first person (outside of my family) who has heard of this.

I think a chef would call it "reduction"... but its truly wonderful.
