  • How do you work in exercise into your daily routine?

When all else fails, i will walk up and down the stairs in my home until i break a sweat, about 10 minutes.

When i can, i love to do the stair stepper at B's hopsital gym and use the weight machines too.

in good weather i walk often but not as often as i'd like. used to be easy to get 12 minutes in around the block, but there are 2 or 3 dogs that have the invisible fence but bark and charge me....too much hassle to walk past them now.

i try to make a point to carry my groceries from the supermarket to my car rather than push the cart.

I get up early and have exercise DVDs that I use and then usually in the evenings, weather permitting, DH and I walk for about an hour.

My wife and I walk 3-5 times a week for about 40-60 minutes after work. It's a nice time to enjoy each other's company and catch up on each other's lives. We've been slacking since it's cold right now.

Pathetically enough..5 minutes at a time each morning while watching my younger ones in the tub...I might march..and some squats, or plies, or fake sking..all the while to silly made up tunes..I am not sure but I think they burn more calories giggling than I do!

And my 'secret; workout 4 isometric things I can do while having a conversation...so no worry about where I am or who is around.

ok, exercises most oflks can do without too much time commitment or discomfort:

            1. food pumps: anytime you get a jug out of the fridge or cans out of a cabinate, 'pump' it 2-3 times in each hand (think weights). slower is more effective! do the same thing when putting things back up. while you're at it, pump your grocery bags when you're packing/unpacking the car.

            2. pick up toe touch: when picking stuff off the floor, try bending at the waist like you would if you were touching your toes. if this is not possible, try to do plies ('squats' if you're a guy) or lunges.

            3. sock skiing: dust mop and exercise at the same time! put on old socks and 'ski' around the the house to dustmop hard floors. be careful, don't slip!

            4. take the stairs 2 at a time going up. go slow, and turn each step into a forward lunge. make it even harder: step up with your right foot, put all your weight on that leg, and let your other foot come off the floor as you straighten at the knee. again, be careful!

also, you might want to research 'yoga in bed' i bought a book for yoga you do in bed when you wake up or just before you go to sleep a couple of years ago, and it's pretty neat. remember how good it feels to stretch all over when you first wake up? it's like that!

for parents, I rememberd a couple favs ...all require being on your back..not to do while pregnant.

baby presses....so long as they can hold their own head up

baby crunch kisses (put em on your lap or knees and crunch up to kiss em..if they are old enough bring your knees in to 'bump em' forward..gently of course.)

'flying' put kid on knees and raise up, then hold hands and lift arms/legs so they are totally in air..maybe you have to see that one....

The only way I can make time to work out is to get up early. It sucked at first, but now I am into the routine, and it really mentally prepares me for my day.

I can't imagine fitting exercise in with children, but investing in a few good workout DVDs might be the way to go.

Oh yeah and tonights..the baby bounce, bounce a leg or two while trying to play a card game and keep your kid from touching the cards, hopefully to fall asleep....dunno how many calories it burns but gotta beat not bouncing...(and he did fall asleep)

I lay out my running clothes the night before and go running first thing in the morning. I'm usually too tired to think clearly so my body just goes onto autopilot adn I get dressed for running and go out the door. Some days I meet a friend on the corner and we run together. It helps knowing she's standing outsdide waiting for me. If all else fails (like a I overs leep) I walk to campus every weel day, ~ 1.5 miles round trip.

I get up an hour early most workday mornings and workout on my elliptical while watching previously recorded tv programs, and then either do Pilates or my strength training routine.

For now, I also walk to work and back home two times a day which gives me approximately 20 minutes of exercise. At work I also end up doing a good bit of walking back and forth between my desk and where the majority of the people are whom I do tasks for.

Re: How do you work in exercise into your daily routine?

Exercise??? What is this of which you speak?????

ooohh...I feel a bad taste in my mouth...does it work that way for you??

I don't like to sweat. UGH. Not afraid of work or anything just don't like the physical side of sweating. yuckers.

hmmmm...I usually get a wild hair three or four times a day and head out the door to take a jaunt to the nearest stop-sign and then back. Sweep the walk each morning. I do touch-the ceiling & touch-the floor stretches in the bathroom while getting ready for a shower. Spin in the dervish style both directions off n' on during the day (try to do this when no one else is around lest they think you are nutz-oids - you'll need somewhere to grab hold of if you are dizzy! Spin w/care.) Swim when I get the chance which is not often enough - was just thinking this morning I need to re-up at the Thursday water aerobics class. Do the bicylcle leg pump thingy while laying in bed thinking of hoping up. Bend and twist while doing laundry. Do the twist & shimmyshake to dance music when it comes on the airwaves (much to my children's chagrin!) Usually it's okay unless I start singing along with and then they get busted up laughing.

Nothing that would make me break out in the physical sense of sweating....

ewwwwwwwww....exercise....I need something to wash the taste out of my mouth. ECK!!! (Partially I blame my parents neither of which ever did any form of exercise that I ever saw.) Alas, I am still fluffy! Need to do more.

Re: How do you work in exercise into your daily routine?

I fit it in when I am at home, I have a full weight set under a table so that I can grab a pair and do a few wt. exercises (I always do a warm up set with the 3 pounders). Stretching is also fit in.

Also, similar to the good idea of sock mopping: I wear socks around the house as in my opinion this exercises the feet better being free of
clunky sneakers. A whole theory is around this with the Barefoot Runners group. Running barefoot may be a bit more drastic, I will stick with the
socks in the house. Other benefits: I once knew a woman who requested everyone who came in leave their shoes at the door - she had beautiful 10 year old carpets!

I also walk my dogs regularly and do aerobics.

I use to walk a lot when we lived on the river cause it was shady, but now I just walk on my treadmill every day.

there is a segment throughtout my day where she emails me and motivates me by talking about body clutter. 15 minutes a day I go into my bedroom and keep moving.. whether it be situps, my 5 lb weights, or jumping jacks.. on nice days in Ohio I take my boys to the park and I take a ball.. I run their legs off as well as mine and the dogs!
