  • Cruelty-free products

I was hoping to get your comments on cruelty-free products related to beauty, personal hygeine and health.
I have changed over to being a vegetarian and dont use:
    mascara,
    eye shadow,
    blush,
    chanl no. five perfum,
    leather,
    silk,
    etc.
Please post about products dont use animal testing.
I dont want to know about how animals are mistreated, but I would like to avoid products that harm them.

dr bonner's (maybe bronner's?) liquid castille soap. pure veggie base and no animal testing. it's a thin liquid, not gel-like. i use it head to toe for personal cleaning, but it also works well for household cleaning, laundry, even dishes. they have plain and scented versions (lavender and peppermint are nice IMO), but all cost the same. you can get it as small as 1 oz or as big as a gallon container.

Major consumer products companies do not test on animal and their products are fairly safe for human/animal. Perhaps in the 70s or 80s they did, but I am absolutely certain that the major one do not. In fact, they test on human and call it "clinical test" or "consumer test".

In addition, being a vegetarian you should avoid lipsticks, which contain lanolin (sheep butter).

It's amazing that an "organic" or "natural" claim can generate so much sales. In many occassions, the "nautral" or "organic" products contains the same active ingredients with the addition of marketing ingredients at 0.1%, which doesn't have an effect.

Here is a list of corporations that test their products on animals, according to PETA.

              Re: Cruelty-free products

Nearly all drugs come to us thru animal testing, even companies that do not test on animals are generally building on the research of those who did. I am not saying it is right, simply that without retreating to a hermit cave, we are not going to get away from the vast majority of animal testing. Or animal byproducts at the least.

To truly avoid the results of animal 'injury' we would have to never take a perscription drug, or over the counter drug, we would have to avoid jello, and many other comercial 'sweets' not to mention staying away from the vast majority of clothing.

IMO when you think of trading plastic for leather...or some such substitution....think of the environment.....Is it better to raise a cow, or burn some chemicals?

I am not saying one or the other is better, just that we need to look at all things, not just poor cows, or even just poor air. but all facts need looked at before we throw our money in support of one company due to a 'cruelty free lable' or any other lable.

I have been using petroleum jelly and bees-wax based products for my lips.
A biochemist , my colleague, told me about herbal shampoos along time ago. Havent found them.
I truly appreciate this input. Please educate me further.
Thank you for the link and the list , frugalmomof1.

                      Re: Cruelty-free products

I am the same way about cruelty free products. i will not use cosmetics tested on animals (however I'm not a vegetarian because I would have no protein if i did not eat meat....... I simply do not like most protein sources... ie eggs)

I'm willing to pay more to know that something is cruelty free.

                        Good for you.
I keep thinking that ungulates and herbivores grow huge on their diets. We over do the protein.
Buddhists who choose not to eat meet still do fine.

                          Re: Cruelty-free products

I agree about many Americans overdoing the protein. I have had many an overweight coworker eat a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich for breakfast, a deli sandwich with 10 servings of meat for lunch, and who knows what for dinner (breakfast and lunch is out so it's not exactly frugal either).

I do beans about once a week (I make a vegetarian chili where I use rice instead of meat) but my stomach always reminds me that I can't do beans more than once a week (think of the 2nd grade poem about beans and you will KWIM)

I eat meat pretty sparingly. When I make recipes (I makea lot of casseroles, etc), I double the veggies, and cut the meat in half. And I cut up the meat so I can get more from a package of it.

                            Re: Cruelty-free products

If you have a Trader Joe's or a Whole Foods nearby you can usually find a good selection of cruelty-free products right in stores.

There are a lot of of subs for meat at most stores today. We have been vegetarians for several months and a dear friend for decades. I don't miss it and he is revolted by it. Our little one age 3 doesn't even miss it.
