They are hugely popular where I live (Victoria, BC). There are so many of them around here now that the city has made several special parking spaces (metered spaces downtown) that can only be used by Smart cars (or a motorcycle I guess). They will ticket you if your car is over a certain length and you try to use the space. I've heard that they are also very safe in accidents (which would have been my main concern). It isn't practical for me as I need at least 3 seats (husband, daughter and I). They are pretty reasonable priced too. The ones here are sold at the Mercedes-Benz dealership, and the last time I looked you could get one for about $15-16K (Canadian), so I'm not sure which one is $30K?
