Go ethnic store grocery shopping and you'll also save more. The meats and stuff are usually cheaper than a normal market. Especially in certain areas. Also for things like rice there are no coupons for asian (long grain/basmanti) rice, which I buy.

      * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
      * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
      * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

        My main reason is here.

I need to know my bottom line before I'm shopping.

I agree with Steve as weel. (I'm not sure if I should be surprised.)

I only use coupons in conjunction with the weekly sale ads, which solves your problem. If the item is on sale for a good price and I have a coupon for it, I take that coupon with me to the store. I don't go to the store with my whole coupon collection. I only bring those coupons that I know make sense for me to use on that trip. So I already know exactly what I'll be paying for the item before I leave my house.

I might look at this approach. I buy few name brand items or convenience items, so it may not be a strategy I can widely use.

How do you know when you see the coupon that it's likely to be in the weekly flyer?

If you use coupons for a while you just get a feel for it.
If you pay attention to your store flyers you'll start to notice that the same things go on sale in cycles. Sometimes the brands will change. 1st you learn that then you ad whatever holiday or time of year it is.

              For example.
January people make New Years resolutions to lose weight (diet/health food)
              February Superbowl (snack foods)
March Frozen food month and lente (Frozen foods, fish)
April Easter (ham, baked goods, eggs)
              May (mexican foods)
June (cookout items for the 4th of July, paper goods)

I'm sure you get the picture.

I look through the flyer and make a note of items on sale for a good price. Then I keep that in mind when looking through that week's coupons. Invariably, coupons tend to match the items on sale that week.

i check my stockpile list first... then i look at my cpns, then decide if i want to go buy those items, and pick up loss leaders at the store.... i try to save, and be selective first and foremost...
