Boy me too - as we face a fast approaching retirement I wish I had some of that money back!!! As in way back, stuck somewhere earning me an income so that Hubster wouldn't have to think about working on into retirement!
I like keychains, from cool places I have been, and yeah I have that problem where some people seem to think I will like just any keychain just because it is a keychain..not so.
I used to collect teddy bears. But like many of you said, other people started giving them to me and my collection went from a few to many and so many I didn't like. I cleared out a bunch of them and used them at school for prizes. But in the meantime my husband started giving me Cherished Teddies and now I have a large collection which are cute, but basically worthless (see EBAY). Years ago I started a Coca-Cola Collection since my dad worked there and I did for a summer. That too has become a problem because so many well intentioned people think because it says Coke I want it. Unfortunately, that is not always the case.
About 5 years ago I decided I wanted Blue Willow dishes to use. So, that's been what I've collected and I told my husband I didn't want anything I couldn't actually use so that has curtailed the collection to a more manageable size. We use my bw for our dishes for meals.
I guess I left out a bunch when I said antiques and children....I collect salt & pepper shakers (unusual or old ones), glass milk bottles, antique canning jars, old kitchen utinsels (which I still use & display in the kitchen), snow globes, quilts, butter churns-about any kind of antique. My snowglobes are limited to a lighten case I have (no dusting!!). Walking into our house is like going back in time except for the TV. Most our furniture is antique. We even have an old wood cookstove for the basement, and old kerosene convered to propane stove for the kitchen, in addition to the modern electric stove. Nice thing is, if the power goes out--we can still function. We do use our antiques-even the spinning wheel and treddle sewing maching and buttern churns!
MY DH used to have a dragon collection that numbered in really high 3 digit numbers. We sold them on ebay and while occasionally an old friend gives us one we just regift it. I used to collect Salt and pepper shakers but sold them when I married DH. I had about 300. I also had a collection of antique cameras, that numbered around 200 that I sold at the same time. I agree collections get out of hand. Right now I have to say there is nothing I collect. DH doesn't have any either. We do save 11 sets of state quarters for our grandchildren. Right now we are 2 ahead of the current count. We haven't encouraged DS2 to collect anything and don't intend to except knowledge!
I started a hummel collection about 30 years ago. Now I wish I could sell them. My husband has about 600 beer cans, all different, some are cone tops. I like to collect signed pictures too. To be trueful, if I could do it all over, I would not have collected anything. Now it is just a bunch of stuff to dust and to pack and move.
Ima - If you really want to sell, why not try Ebay? If you don't want to do the Ebay selling yourself, you can find a commission seller who will sell for you. [Of course, they'll take a hefty commission but at least you'll get some cash.] Wouldn't that add big bucks to your $20 challenge pot?!?
I probably could not get half of what I paid for them, which is a shame. The older trademarks should make them worth much more.
Perhaps not, but then you wouldn't have to dust or move them.
And you never know, depending on their rarity, they might sell for more than what you think.
Here's a link to a Hummel figurine selling on Ebay for over $1,400 with 2 more days of bidding left to go:
Granted, getting that much money is extremely rare, but might be worth looking in to.
Now that I see how much some of the figures sell for on Ebay (gasp!) I have to say it might be better to try to sell them yourself rather than use a commision seller ...

As I mentioned, I collect Disney memorabilia. We had our annual collector's club post-holiday party today and we were discussing this very topic. Many people are disappointed to discover that when they go to sell their collection, it brings very little, sometimes even less than the paid for the items. But some money is better than no money, especially when you consider that you didn't buy these items as investments. You bought them for the enjoyment having them brought you. I love my collection. I love spending time looking through stuff. I love showing it to others. I love wandering through antique shops looking for new pieces. I love browsing ebay and finding that must-have item. Will I make a profit when I eventually sell stuff? Yes on some items. Most likely no on most of them. But I will have had decades of pleasure from buying and owning everything.

It is not only I am cheap, just over time I Rethink collecting altogether. SO I have a million monkeys and dragons, sitting around, gathering dust, no use. what is the point?
We purged most the monkeys a while back, and I was just perusing ebay to see what I could sell all my dragon stuff for. I am just done with hoarding material things - don't see the point any more. At one time it was fun, but for what? - now I am going to sell them all.
Granted I Was perusing dragons on ebay and saw all sorts of cool new ones - LOL. Think I am just bored with what I have... But I don't really have the money to rebuild a collection right now. So I wouldn't be surprised if I started a new one when I felt we had the means - hehe. In the meantimes I am in anti-collection mood. For the most part as I think about it more carefully I will probably choose not to rebuild any sort of collection no matter how much money I have. They just no longer hold any importance to me.
