Wal-Mart is the largest private employer in the US and the 2nd largest employer overall after the government. Their annual income is higher than all but the GDPs of 20 countries.

2006 was a completely walmart-free year for me! In fact I haven't been there since September 2005 and if I can help it I will never go back in one again.

I shop at Target and sometimes Kmart for toiletries.
Hy-Vee, Cub and Aldi's for groceries.
        Kohl's and Sears for clothing.

          I’ve never been in a Wal-Mart.

Groceries: WinCo, Canned Foods Grocery Outlet, and Safeway for my club soda and loss leaders.
Toiletries, cleaning supplies: Mostly Canned Foods and WinCo.
Household: garage sales, thrift stores. Vintage furniture at local stores. Some at Target, rarely, like bathroom rugs, etc., maybe once or twice a year.
Clothes: Lots of hand me downs (when the word gets out, it snowballs), garage sales, thrift stores. For stuff I don’t find (often socks, undies, etc.), Ross Dress for Less, used to go to Old Navy outlet, was thinking of stopping (overseas labor blah blah blah) but it closed in my area so I didn’t have to decide.
Books: Library, buck-a-bag book sale at Friends of the Library, trade with friends, garage sales, thrift stores, local used bookstore.

I tend to not buy so much, which helps.

I shop at Target for some clothes and necessities (like socks, underwear, toilet paper) but I do the bulk of my shopping at Nature's Pantry, a locally-owned organic/natural foods store. I buy most of my cleaning products there, too, because I don't like to use a lot of chemicals when I clean.

They have an amazing bulk foods section. Wal-Mart can't come close to beating their prices!

I have nothing against Wal Mart, but I only went there twice last year. I know when i go I will spend too much so I just don't go. We don't actually have one in our town, but there is one over in Murphy. N.C. where I go to buy liquor. I have never been in a target and there are no K marts around here either.

Groceries: Whole Foods/Trader Joe's/ Shop Rite
                Toiletries: Macy's (bedding, pots)
Clothing: Macys, Lord &Taylors, and I do some online shopping because you can really get a nice deal if you look around especially when they have coupons.

                    My favorite stores are:

                    Trader Joe's (affordable organic)
                    Peter's Imports
                    Walgreens (cus of the freebies)

I just don't get the "anti-Walmart thing". I shop at Walmart all the time and I like it! I never have any problem returning things there and I like their selection.

I have tried to explain this whole "Wal-Mart" thing to my boss. I don't think shopping at Wal-Mart is necessary the biggest evil. I do think being brainwashed that Wal-Mart is the only place to shop is and I see that among the many people I work with. The problem, in my opinion, lies with the fact so many think Wal-Mart is always the cheapest and therefore rush there to buy everything. Eventually Wal-Mart will be the only place to shop because they will run all the other businesses out and then will raise all their prices. I've seen it happen in small towns around us and now the residents are crying how Wal-Mart has hurt their economy.

Yes but both Costco and Target purchased a larger percentage of its product (not just clothes) from the asia region.
