Re: Anti - Wal-mart Shoppers... where do you like to shop?

The main reason I don't shop at wal-mart is because they're usually dirty. I prefer Target and Meijer for most of my shopping.

Re: Anti - Wal-mart Shoppers... where do you like to shop?

I shop a variety of places avoiding Wal-mart whenever I can.

I do most of my grocery shopping at Cub Foods and some at Kroger's. I buy my meat at a locally run grocery called East Side Locker. I do hit Aldi as well for staples.

I buy from Target and K-Mart for cleaning supplies (I watch their ads).

We buy from Lowe's and Menards for home improvement and such.

If my husband didn't want Dean's Easy 2% because he's lactose intolerant, we probably wouldn't step foot in Wal-Mart. As it is, we go once every two weeks to buy his milk. I've asked the other local stores if they will carry it, but they don't because they say there isn't a big enough demand.

I also shop the Dollar stores and Dollar General.

      Thanks for asking!

I avoid Walmart when I can. Instead, we use:
the local owned pharmacy for RX
Walgreen for HBA (many items are free after I coupon or use their rebate booklet)
Aldie's for most grocery items--most our cooking is from scratch, so we don't need the packaged prepared foods from Walmart
Dollar General for HBA and cleaning products and school supplies
$1 shop--great for things like candles, papergoods, toothbrushes and picture frames
Local feed store for pet food
Local Amish store for kitchen items & fabric & notions
Consignment store for clothes--my girls wear school uniforms, so between the hand me downs and consignment, not much need for other clothes, as they only wear them for play or Sunday (and I sew also)
I can and have by passed Walmart for months and months at a time. Its not hard, I mean, I was shopping before we got a walmart and we survived...

Groceries: I can do lots better than the Evil Empire's (WM) prices by watching the sales and buying in bulk. I grocery shop at County Market (local area), Aldi's, and a small independent market for general groceries. I shop at an Amish bulk food store for staples, and buy beef, pork and chicken from local farmers.

The toiletries and cleaning supplies usually come from Dollar General; a few toiletries come from Walgreens (crystal deoderant once a year, etc..).

We don't currently take any prescriptions, but when we did, they came from the pharmacy at the hospital where I work.

Socks and undies come from a local outlet store, my clothes come from the Salvation Army or Catholic Charities; Hubs usually gets his outer clothing as gifts. I occasionally shop at Penneys or Sears (when I return a gift and have to take a gift card in exchange.) Dress Barn on occasion if I need something a bit dressier, or a top. I also sew, and have remade several jumpers that were given to me into skirt and vest outfits suitable for work.

We shop at DeBurh's Feed and Seed (local; in business over 100 years) and at Rural King for pet feeds/needs; we also buy other items at Rural King - oil for oil changes (Hubs does), misc hardware, etc...

We get along quite well without Wal-Mart.

I go to all the luxury places (Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, etc. ). I train myself very hard to only shop for stuff that is 75% to 90% off. I usually end up spending far less than Wal-Mart, and I have the satisfaction of shopping at luxury places.

I shop for toiletries and such at the dollar general store. I admit that I do sometimes go to walmart but avoid it most of the time!

Two businesses are closing in our town this week. Our business section quoted both owners as saying they could no longer keep going because of being undersold by Wal-mart. One was a department store that had been in business over 50 years. The other was a full-service gas station that also did auto repairs and had been family owned for over 73 years. Attention, Wal-Mart shoppers....

Rob, that is so sad. My father in law has owned grocery stores all of his life and for about the last decade, he's had to purchase small stores in very rural areas that didn't have a walmart because as soon as a walmart comes to town, he's out of business.

I think that's what happens when Wal-Mart comes to town. The sad part is so many people are brainwashed that Wal-Mart is the only place to shop that it evetually becomes the only place to shop because every other store closes.

Hate Waldogs - try to avoid it at all costs!!! Do have to go ocassionally, but it's rare!

Spend my grocery money at the LOCAL small grocery store or Aldi's or Save-A-Lot.
Spend my household money at the Dollar General getting laundry, papergoods, etc.
Spend my allowance money at the thrifts and goodwill.
Spend our gas money at the corner 'non-national' gas station or the small operator one that's near son's work.

I also rarely shop K-Mart or Target, but more because I just really don't like shopping that much - if I have to go shopping I'd be more likely to go to one of those than Walmart. Count me in on the non-shopper bunch. Keeps my WASTE-line thinned down!

Think - What would Ima do???

I think this depends greatly on the location. As I've said in other threads, around here, Wal-Mart has been great for business. The two most recently opened Wal-Marts, opened in shopping centers that were all but deserted. There were just a handful of small businesses struggling to stay alive. Along comes Wal-Mart, and now both centers are vibrant, bustling shopping areas with numerous new stores, restaurants, salons, post office, etc. None of that development would have occurred if not for the Wal-Marts. Both stores also happen to be located in economically depressed areas. So rather than taking away shopping choices, Wal-Mart has resulted in nearly 2 dozen new shopping and dining options, besides Wal-Mart, for these people to patronize.

Disneysteve, that's great if Wal-Mart has helped your local economy. However, here in the Midwest it appears it has hurt more communities than it has helped. Guess it depends on the location, as you said.

It was quite interesting. I was reading a research report a few months back by one of the investment banks. The whole idea behind the report was to figure what percentage of product was purchased from the asian supply chain. As expected the clothing manufacturers purchased a good 80% from asia but where I thought Walmart would be on top, both Target and Costco trumped Walmart in how much was purchased from Asia.

I still don't think you can beat Walmart when it comes to commodity priced items like cleaning supplies. I did find a TV stand there that was the best one I could find shopping a lot of different areas. I don't go into Walmart expecting top notch customer service. At least Walmart always has enough lanes open. I can't say that about Target (even though I shop there a ton too).
