      Re: Do you buy pop?

I used to buy SODA (that's the NY term for this..... I had a hard time figuring out what this thread was about) until about a month ago. I would buy diet cola (whether it was Coke or Pepsi determined what brand was on sale that week) by the case, and keep them in my trunk to drink at work. I never had it at home because if I drank it after 3, I'd be up all night.

However I weaned myself off it. IN fact I have a can of Diet Coke on my desk at work that's been sitting there since before Thanksgiving. I havent had any soda since before THanksgiving, and that's a huge accomplishment for me. Now I'm just making more trips to the water cooler (I drink tap water at home, company provided bottled water at work). In fact I'm using a 20 oz soda bottle that I rinsed, and I drink water from it.

we buy some when it's on sale to keep around for guests and also for the occasional treat... i find that certain sodas tend to settle my stomach when it's upset and that we also get the occasional craving for a drink other than water/milk/crystal lite...
i also have found that i don't like diet soda much as too much of it will start to taste funny and makes me feel funny...

I haven't had diet soda since 1999. I quit it cold turkey when I read a study that indicated that it was linked to miscarriage and that artificial sweetners like aspartame and saccharine were excitotoxins and neruotoxins in the brain and could also interfere with fetal brain development. Since I was trying to get pregnant, it scared me. Never went back to it.

I used to be a Pepsiholic. I'd drink at least 1 liter a day. The addiction only kicked in when they started using high fructose corn syrup instead of sugar to sweeten it. Before that I was happy with a shot glass in the morning and one right after school (college). When I decided to try to find $10 a week to put into savings, I confronted my Pepsi habit and took that money to save instead. I rarely bought it after that. Just when out to eat after that. Now I might have one a month, but I won't bring it in the house.

We are in the process of trying to not buy soft drinks. My wife really likes her Dr. Pepper. A coworker of mine recently pointed out to me what others have said here about causing osteoporosis and heartburn. I have even read about esophageal cancer caused by the acid from the stomach coming up during burps eating away the wall of the esophagus. I don't think I'm addicted, but it sure goes better with certain foods than water does. I also work 12 hr overnight shifts without the benefit of coffee so a soft drink helps me trough the wee hours of the morning.
Another thing that may help the addicts - I recently poured a Coke on the terminals of my car battery to get rid of the corrosion. Takes about 30 seconds to get it all off. Surely that's not good for your body!

My soda habit costs very little. I work in convenience stores and get free fountain drinks. I ususally drink one 44 oz Dr. Pepper a day. I will buy a 12 pack at home for company or guests but not a regular purchase.
