  • Does Anyone Else Boycott Office Xmas Parties?

I have yet to go once; this is my 3rd year here. It's a 2-hour drive into the city on a weekday night, which actually i could care less about. Nothing against the people i work with and talk frequently with on the phone, but i see no need to schlep down there and hang out at a bar, being a non-existent drinker.

Unfortunately, always feel like there's subtle pressure being put on me to attend. Guess i'm just a homebody through and through.

No problem if your reason has nothing to do with company's whatevers, I am a homebody too and if I dont feel like attending a celebration whether its office-related or not, I dont add up to the bulk of people there.

Actually, I wont be attending the office XMAS PARTY on the 23rd.

attending our unit's Xmas party is kind of compulsory...if only because our boss asks us to be there half an hour before our "guests" so he may give us an overview of what we did during the year/what we can expect in the coming year and make a "private" toast before the festivities....since there's only 22 of us, it's very obvious if you don't go...
And, since he always insist that our parties be THE party of the year, it's actually quite enjoyable...there's always plenty of dancing, eating, drinking, fireworks....and there's always a surprise that only our "social committee" knows about!...I tend to leave early, though (around midnight, right during the fireworks)...I hear they generally last until 3 or 4 am...

I enjoy going to my office holiday party... because we volunteer at a toy drive and wrap gifts and sort things out at a warehouse. We then have snacks or pizza afterwards. Also an event happened for Thanksgiving where all the directors and above serve the employees thanksgiving meal. They accept donations that go to the food harvest and the company matches the employee contributions.

Why turn down free food! I really don't like to go to these things either but do go every few years.

Our Christmas Party is 1 hour at lunch and it is mandatory attendance. The managing partner has threatened to fire anyone who doesn't attend! Secret Santa is also mandatory but we get a free lunch so I'll be there and I used a gc I got for my birthday to buy the secret santa gift

We had our office luncheon today - we went to a restaurant and paid for ourselves. It's an informal lunch that we decided to start last year. We do a potluck lunch at the office when it gets closer to Christmas. I attend and enjoy both. I wouldn't go if I didn't enjoy myself.

we go for the free food and booze. It's a fun thing, and the company gets a discounted rate for a room at the hotel...

Held during business hours on company property -- that means we are paid to go to the party. I have no objection to attending.

The one year it was held off-site and after hours, I RSVP-ed my regrets.

ours this year is at a restaurant across the street from the office. It's free except for a cash bar. I'll stay a few hours, after all free food. And I might have a beer or 2.

However I did opt out of the gift exchange

company party is being held at my boss's house this year. since he and his wife were social with me and my husband before i even started working here, it's definitely not a hassle for DH and I to go. plus who can turn down free tasty food and beverages?

Yes free food, but the people are too many plus they will bring their families too, we dont celebrate per unit/dept..it is a huge huge xmas celebration

Oh my, once I was hired into an office in December. I had some training one week offsite, then was in the office for only a week when I was TOLD that I and the other new hire would be providing baby-sitting during the holiday party since we didn't know anyone yet! I quit that same day. There were other issues involving waste of your tax dollars, but the baby-sitting order just confirmed how bad the problems were at this office. Shortest job I ever had.

Mostly I never worked where there was a party. Whether I'd go or not would depend on my energy level.
