I can't right now--taking a free class on the educational station on DISH. But, normally I put the dish on vacation rate $5 a month, every summer while school is out, so my kids don't sit in front of it all summer.
Since next year we are home schooling, I have been checking out the learning channel, university channel and a couple others. My kids have all taken Spanish for the last 4 years at school, and it appears we can continue with their Spanish and add possible French at no charge. I will tape the programs when they are on, and we will use them--no charge as we pay for DISH already.
Today is my second try. Yesterday I had turned it on before I even realised. As soon as I sat down I remembered and thought damm. Oh well its on now. I've been up for 30 mins and so far so good. The hardest challenge is going to be to not watch the TV that the kids are watching.
When i was much younger you could not keep me away from the tv, but at one point in my life i was separated from tv for a long period of time and something happened? i grew away from it, its something to keep yourself or ban ur self but its another when a person degrades, be little's and takes away your privilege to do something, in this case watch tv. So I haven't been a big tv watcher ever since although when i do i love hgtv and the cooking networks!
While I don't have a TV (use a projector for movies) I do regularly watch/download 4-5 shows a year on my PC. I definitely watch more movies at home, but don't want cable TV to pick up more bad habits.
But for giving up TV/movies for a week, that's easy for me. Now giving up the Internet for a week, that would be tough.
Having no cable is probably the best and reward-able habit that I have ever done.
I haven't watched cable for about 8+ years now.
I haven't watched local TV for about 3 years now.
I do watch Netflix, but almost rarely (family shared account, so I'm not really paying anything)
You also become more constructive with your time.
"The average American over the age of 2 spends more than 34 hours a week watching live television, says a new Nielsen report"
We just took the "Screen-Free Week" pledge - no screens for entertainment for 7 days. It's time to take a look the role of the tube/laptop in our lives. http://www.screenfree.org/
