The price of the beauty per month can never be more than what you earn per month.
This formula goes for models too.

I don't spend that much: free shampoo, conditioner, lotions, creams with super double coupons; $2 hair coloring (with super double coupons) every 8 weeks. I do buy a MAC lipstick and a MAC mascara once a year (the same colors always *lol*) and my MIL gets me a HUGE jar of Clinique moisture surge for my birthday each year that last at least 12-14 months. I don't use razors, hair products, fancy combs, etc. I don't tan or get expensive hair cuts. I make my own deodorant cream every six months... supplies run about $5 each time. I do love a good brow wax but I barter that service with a friend who likes homemade frozen potpies every few months.

Re: Beauty....how much is it worth?

I have no problem with beauty spending as long is people are doing it to make themselves happy, not to slavishly satisfy some ideal they feel they need to meet to be acceptable to the world.

Personally, I have a few bottles of perfume (gifts) but I rarely remember to put any on. I own a few bits of drugstore makeup (bought on clearance) but only put it on a few times a year.

I love a good manicure but can't make myself pay for it, so I just do without. I occasionally get my brows waxed because I like the way they looks when they're well groomed and I hate tweezing.

I have a condition which makes me grow unwanted hair, and I pay a fair amount for a perscription cream to stop it. I used to find the hair very distressing, and now I'm much happier and less worried, which I think is worth the money.

I may consider dying my hair when it goes gray. I won't know until I get there. I would consider having plastic surgery if I lose a great deal of weight and have loose skin that is bothersome.

If I had unlimited funds I would do more, but I'm content to do without, which is very freeing! I mostly just don't want to become one of those women who is so insecure/uncomfortable in their own skin that they don't think they're OK unless they've fussed with their hair and piled on a bunch of makeup!

I think makeup is hugely overpriced. I only use foundation, a little blush and lip gloss, nevery anything on the eyes and i've never had a manicure in my life.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. My DH considers makeup a waste of money. I don't wear any. I own perfume (gift) and of course use shampoo. I cut his and DS2's hair (crew cuts) myself. I have my hair cut 2 or 3 times a year for about 16.00. I am going grey and often consider coloring it until I find out the price then I decide I earned those grey hairs, I'll wear them proudly.

I agree that makeup is way over priced. I do spend a bit on "health and beauty" but that is because I buy skin care and hair care (shampoo, soap, moisturize, etc) from Origins and local organic and all natural sources. It costs more but is more earth friendly and better for me. I also don't wear much make up unless there is an even or something specific.

Re: Beauty....how much is it worth?

Hmmm. I don't wear makeup except for special occasions (what I do have is drug store quality and lasts years since I don't use it much), don't use skin products (except lip balm and plain ol' body lotion in the winter, dry skin yah know...) get my hair trimed twice a year at Great Clips, don't do my finger nails at all, and paint my own toe nails in the summer for sandal season. My two indulgences are higher quality shampoo/conditioner (either Dove or Pantine, whatever is on sale that week) and my rose perfume from Crabtree & Evelyn.

So, I guess "beauty" isn't worth that much to me!

Re: Beauty....how much is it worth?

I rearly if ever where makeup, so the cost there is minimal. I do have to use lotion, very dry skin. I don't do my nails, or wax anything. The only weakness I have in this category is my hair. It's a bit longer than waist length so I am always looking for the best conditions out there. I've tried lots and I usually stick with what I like. I probably spend a couple hundred a year on just hair products.

It all depends on how it makes you feel. There are those that have blemishes or something on their face that they want to conceal. Everyone has something different. I like wearing make-up; but I also like giving my face a rest. I enjoy going to Public Beauty Schools and getting facials. They are so worth it and very reasonable. Plus, you're giving someone a chance to use their art to learn.

I believe it's just knowing what our motives are when it comes to beauty. What motives you use can help individual face their own reasoning or value on beauty.

I notice from observation that a lot of people get mixed up with looking "sexy" and looking "nice" as the same thing when in fact it’s so different. This can lead to dressing improperly for job interviews and etc.

I do buy hair conditioner because my hair is so frizzy if I don't. I think frizzy hair does not look "nice” My make-up looks natural, I like using it because I am not washed out looking or pale looking sick but yet I still look the same. It is also a quick way to look refreshed when I am on my not so good days. I have been told by co-workers that I look sick when I do not wear any make-up to work on some days. I like the tinted moisturizer because it has sunscreen in it and it’s not thick or eye burning like the plain sunscreen.

Re: Beauty....how much is it worth?

I spend a lot of money on cleansers, lotions and makeup, etc. When I was younger I had acne which left minor scarring on my face. I find that if I don't use the right products (which tend to be expensive), I will still get blemishes........at 30, UGH!!!!!!!

I tried getting chemical peels at my dermatologist for a while (which were quite expensive) but they didn't really help with the scarring, and left my skin very dry.

And the truth is, I enjoy wearing and experimenting with make up and other beauty products. If I look good then I feel good, and to me that is priceless.

BUT, if spending the money on beauty products would ever mean that my family would have to do without, I would look for cheaper alternatives.

i think i agree with you... it's important to me to look nice... and it is all about priorities/motivation... for me, the one i am most likely to spend real money on is skin... i have sensitive skin and it's a difficult skin tone to match so i buy department store foundation...also i have been comtemplating LASIK eye surgery (would have to save up for quite awhile) and maybe even a few other things...

I spent $15 three years ago for two lipsticks, eyeshadow, and a bottle of perfume from Avon. I am still working my way through it all. I don't wear a lot, since I'm fair, but my friend gave me a few things too.

I woulnd't have bought it at all except for student teaching, and office work.

I think make-up is one of the best "cheap" indulgences. I don't mind spending $5 on a lipgloss that lasts 6 months, rather than on a cup of fancy coffee that you gulp down. I don't believe in spending a lot of money on make-up though, from what I hear you are paying mostly for packaging and advertising, not to mention the floor space in a dept store.

I used to spend quite a bit on skin creams, but lately I just use the discount store stuff and it works find. Olay is great, works just as well as the expensive stuff I used to buy. Also, if anyone likes to use body wash, try Ultra Rich Shea Butter by Softsoap. For $3 for a huge bottle, it's great.
