Re: What do you use the library for?

I usually get 3-4 books a week from the public library and another couple from the university library--which is good, because although I can afford to buy books, I can't afford bookshelves as easily! My library doesn't collect movies or CDs (except for audiobooks), though.

Re: What do you use the library for?

I used to go about once a week or so, they had a good selection of videos, books and computer programs. Last year they 'improved' it and now the outside looks like a minimum security prison and the inside like a museum. There are lots of loooong hallways, (they should look into selling motorized scooters for people who have trouble walking through all those hallways) the computer programs are gone and the videos are practically non-existant and in another section with another checkout line. If you want to find a certain book you have to find a computer that is not in use by someone surfing the internet (not an easy task), I haven't found the periodicals or any music area (it's probably in there somewhere with a dozen cd's being guarded by three library people). The whole place is just depressing.

But hey! I got a nice huge library with a "Booktique" (if I wanted to buy books I wouldn't be at the library) and a cafe.

I just order books from them online and they mail them to me.

Re: What do you use the library for?

I'm at the library a few times a month to rent out free DVDs or CDs, less often books.

They have a foreign film series i try to get to.

I reference Consumer Report if i'm buying something fairly expensive.

I donate my own used books there for their book sale.

I occasionally attend special programs or talks there.

I pay a lot in taxes, so i try to take advantae of it as much as i can.

We check out movies mainly kids as they have a much better selection & my kids are hardly asleep for us to get away with anything past PG/ PG-13.

I check out books with the intention of reading them & never do as I forget I have them & my oldest kid doesn't let me have a moments peace when she's concious! *sigh*

          Dh checks out music CD's.

I'd love to go to the local UW extension library to do some genealogy but I don't think they have free day care *LOL*

Re: What do you use the library for?

I used to go to the library a lot and I still do on occasion. I find it really relaxing to just sit in there and browse through magazines and what not.

I used to check out a bunch of books that I had an interest in instead of buying them. This over the years had saved me tons of money!

Re: What do you use the library for?

I use the library to sleep. Oh wait, no, that's the homeless people.

I get books there, sometimes movies, especially series. Sometimes I read the magazines if I'm not overwhelmed by the smell. :P

Ima, you should ask the librarians to show you how to use their system. I'm sure they will be glad to help you and it probably isn't that hard once they show you how. If you can learn to post here, you can probably learn their system very quickly.

Re: What do you use the library for?

I just checked out 6 new books from the library. I'm an avid reader, and I love going to bookstores and libraries. What I tend to do is go to places like Borders/B&N with a pen and paper, write down the books that look interesting, and then check them out from the library. IF there's a book I really like, I will search it on Amazon and see what they recomment,a nd again use the library.

I occasionally check out DVDs, but I use it mostly for books. And I'll sit on their couches and read magazines.

Re: What do you use the library for?

Mostly I just borrow books, 6-10 per month. I haven't rented any movies, because I get a lot of free rentals from erewards and I borrow a lot from my sister.

My library has several free and discount passes to local museums and zoos. I borrowed a zoo pass this summer, and me, DH, DS, my friend and her son all went for free.

I just found out that there are audiobooks available online, so I plan to check those out as well.

Besides all of the other benefits already mentioned, I buy used magazines and books there. Magazines like Taste of Home, Country Life, Smithsonian and National Geographic are great even if they are several months old, .10 cents each. If they are overstocked on hardcover books, they usually go for .50 cents to a 1.00.

Re: What do you use the library for?

I use my local library for movies, dvds, books on cd's, funny comedians on video or cd. Our local library also has movies to view during lunch time and supplies free drinks. We also have story tellers which are quite fun, jazz musicians, choirs, ensembles who sing in the middle section of the library on certain nights. They also have week night movie night which is fun for the family and they supply something for that also. It is a good way to get the family out of the house for free.

Try checking with your local library or suggest to them something to do if they want more people to come to the library. If they don't come, the employees don't serve.

Other than the obvious, I use the library for interlibrary loan materials to keep up to date on educational issues -- why purchase when I can borrow!

On a personal note, about 18 years ago I started using the public library's bookmobile and met and fell in love with the library assistant. We celebrated our 16th wedding anniversary last June...guess I went in for a book and checked him out!

                              Awww.

I met my sweetie in a library, too. It helped that we were both studying to be librarians at the time, but still.
