LAL, what do you mean by off the grid? Do you mean living in a way such that they are not included in statistics? So that more are poor than is reflected in public statistics? Or perhaps that more are actually middle class or even upper class, yet not reflected in statistics?
How do they do that (live off the "statistics grid") if that is what you meant."There is some ontological doubt as to whether it may even be possible in principle to nail down these things in the universe we're given to study." --text msg from my kid

I'm wondering too. If they have a legit income and pay taxes, they'd be in the stats for the purposes of this discussion.Originally posted by Joan.of.the.Arch View PostLAL, what do you mean by off the grid? Usually they're "modern homesteaders" who live in rural areas, grow/can a lot of their own vegetables, etc.Originally posted by Joan.of.the.Arch View PostLAL, what do you mean by off the grid? In that case, they wouldn't be counted in "poorest city" since they don't live in the city.Originally posted by Nutria View PostUsually they're "modern homesteaders" who live in rural areas, grow/can a lot of their own vegetables, etc.Steve

Living off the grid is largely a myth. There are darned few actually doing it. Almost all have municipal electricity, an automobile, telephones, radio and television at a minimum. Anybody that can afford land enough for some type of homesteader lifestyle still needs some income for taxes and the basic necessities; utility bills, tools, fuel, livestock feed, groceries, clothing, etc.
I've got some pretty rural acquaintances that live about as cheap as anyone could, but they still have to work a job to stay afloat if they're not on a pension, welfare or disability of some sort. In today's world, you can't live off the land alone.
