    Re: Christmas

I was feeling a bit bah-humbug-ish about the holidays and then I got this little piece of joy and happiness in my email box!! Love it!

      Re: Christmas

I need your help. Where will I be able to get Christmas cards early (like, now or in the next month or so) at a decent price? I'd like to get a majority of them at least addressed since I don't know when the company is going to have us move, and it could be anytime between now and March with little notice.

Oh, and I did TRY to get the DH to do Christmas cards using his Da*n Spare reindeer cards (to his friends, that is)-- yeah, right! He's a great husband in many, many ways...but he's still a man. I have to practically write his thank you notes for him! (Actually, I have been known to script them, but then make him write then in his own hand. He always says he doesn' t know what to write, so I thought that kind of coaching would help...)

        Re: Christmas

Typical "let's inflict our beliefs on everyone around us" attitude. The ACLU is about free speech safe speech for everyone. Your trying to disable them hinders their work for many causes; some you agree with in addition to some you don't. I suggest you educate yourself about their work before you waste your time in a hostile and, incidentally, NON CHRISTIAN way and don't salvage your "bah humbug"ness by trashing an organization that would, if necessary, defend your right to voice your opinion.
Do your thing in a positive way with people who welcome your message; I for one, do not (and by the way, I'm a Chrisian Minister serving a church in NYC; I've very grateful for the work the ACLU does in many different venues.).

          Re: Christmas

I am going to a tourist town this week with lots of shopping places. It would be a good time to do some christmas shopping. Problem is, prices are so high in a tourist town.

            Re: Christmas

I'm so excited! Today at Rite-Aid I found 2 perfect gifts for my family's Christmas gift swap (where you pull numbers and the 1st person chooses a gift, then 2nd person can either take #1s gift or choose an unopened gift, etc.). One is a milkshake mixer and the other is a smoothie maker. Each is normally $29.99, but today they were 75% off -- only $7.49 each!

My family loves kitchen gadgetty gifts -- last year I put together a box with a belgian waffle maker, blueberry and strawberry syrup, powdered sugar and chocolate chips. It was a real hit! SInce the $ limit is a value of $30, I could leave it as it is, but I'll probably include fun glasses and maraschino cherries with the milkshake one and maybe protein powder and curly straws with the smoothie one and I'll still be under budget. WOoHoo!!

                    Re: Christmas

I have a christmas fund that I start in July. Put $50 every two weeks in it tell the 2nd week in Dec. Whatever I have in my christmas fund that is all I spend. The last two years I have really cut down on christmas. I have two daughters and it is sad when you ask them what they would like for christmas and they reply, "I DON'T KNOW". We used to the adults and the grandchildren draw names, but we all decided just to let the grandchildren draw names. None of us adults really need anything. This year I am going to go as low as I can go for christmas. I just hate spending that money when I could use it to pay down my car debt.

                      Re: Christmas

To answer your question no I haven't started my christmas shopping. Just dread the thought of taking my time and looking for christmas gifts that you don't know what to get others including your kids. some clothes, cd's etc.,. My mom has everything she needs and so do I. I don't mean to sound like scrouge but it's like since it's christmas you have to give a gift.

                        Re: Christmas

I like the Christmas ornament idea! I also like the gift basket idea. For my boyfriend, who likes to cook, I got a big stockpot at a restaurant supply place, filled it with different beautiful pastas and a serious paring knife. He was delighted.

One year, for an assistant at our store, we bought a fishing pail at a bait store and filled it with all sorts of fake bait and a hat from a fishing resort near us. He was thrilled.

One idea is to think about the person's day; do they get up and make coffee Maybe a grinder and luxury beans or crystal sugar wands.

Do they always read at lunch hour? how bout a beautiful bookmark and a gift certificate to B and N.

Hiker? Membership to a park or nature conservancy and binoculars

Museum memberships are great; usually pretty cheap too.

One day of maid service. A pedicure and some cute flip flops.

One of those remote car-starting thingies (this went over VERY VERY well)

Movie coupons. A pre paid tab to their favorite local restaurant.

                          Re: Christmas

I am not buying gifts for anyone this year except my twins. Small things only, they are too young (11 months) to know better (or ask for expensive things). Their grandparents will take care of them. I am trying to get out of serious debt that we accrued for fertility treatments...and that my ex left me with! This will be my first Christmas without him..will probably be lonely.

YOU know THEY WILL not remember this year so I agree why spend a fortune on them when they are little that is a great idea you could look at garage sales & try for toys for tots since you are a single mom just to get some small things

                              Re: Christmas

We draw names at our family reunion on Labor Day. This includes my aunts & uncles on my Dad's side, my parents, brother and sister and their families. We have a limit of $25.00 and each person has to give a list with at least 6 things on it. I am also making a family picture calendar including pictures for birthdays in each month so have been taking pictures for a few months now. We all buy for the kids, our family has grown quite a bit with new nieces and great nieces, so we try to buy something from their list that is on sale or find a really good deal on.

Ive got some money set aside for next week. Ill be visiting DC and Philadelphia so Ill be on the lookout for unique gifts for my mom and brother. Its always better to find unique gifts than splurge on really expensive ones, imo.
