We visited a museum today using passes I printed out for free from our library's web site last week. It was a 1-hour drive each way along a very scenic route, which is part of why we chose that museum. After visiting the museum and before our return, we took a nice walk with the dog who could join us for a ride-a-long thanks to the cool weather. Our cost was the approx 100 miles we drove plus a $2 toll. We left right after breakfast, returned home by lunchtime, and brought water with us. Fun and frugal (and educational)!

My library just got Hoopla so I streamed a movie and downloaded some Halloween music.

Click image for larger version Name:	red-zinger.jpg Views:	0 Size:	263.7 KB ID:	727727 I dehydrated my second bucket of these. Roselle, Hibiscus sabdariffa. It is the calyx of the flower now encasing the seed pods. Red zinger tea is the commercially available version of Roselle tea. I hope to make some jam with them, too. I hear it makes a fine jam.

Archery killed a big fat doe whitetail behind the house yesterday which will yield about 40 lbs of excellent processed meat.
No cost for a tag since it's on my property, but she did roll on and break a $10 arrow.

Are you going to tan the hide yourself? My brother pays a tanner, and the guy isn't cheap.

I have tanned one hide in the past, hair on for a wall hanging, not good for much else unless you get them turned into buckskin.

Typically harvest 4-5 deer per year and don't mess with the hides, typically just discard them with the bones.
Used to be a guy that would pay $5 apiece for them, but no longer around. I'd certainly give somebody a hide.

Wow, I really like the idea, and the fence looks amazing. I’m sure that the deer won’t get out and that the fence will stay durable for a long time. Lately, I’ve noticed that my gates were operating really awkwardly. They made weird sounds and did not close till the end. At first, I didn’t care much, but after a couple of weeks, I understood that they needed a repair. I decided to go online and find a solution for them. After some time, I was able to find Austin Gate Repair, and it was the best discovery ever. They were able to fix my gates in no time, and now they are finally working properly. I would love to recommend them to everyone.

Yesterday was another decluttering day at Mom's, but I managed to work in some fun & frugal time too. The weather was great so my brother and I took a long walk to check out the neighborhood Halloween decorations. I helped Mom get blinged out a bit for handing out candy in the evening and fixed her hair, then took photos that she can share with her friends. Also brought frozen mini homemade waffles for them that I know they'll be enjoying between now & my next visit. Finally, I snagged 2 pieces of candy from their bowl that I enjoyed on my way home.

Today, I put up Christmas lights (which I've had since 2006!). Doing Christmas early because, why not? Some people would rather pay someone to hang their lights, but this wasn't an awful way to spend the early part of the afternoon. Good weather, good exercise, and it's beginning to feel a bit like... Thanksgiving. We're not through Thanksgiving yet! But soon...

Nice! Where did you get them? Store bought or did you get them out in the wild ?

I've been slowly working my way through Castle Rock Season 2 on DVD (free from the library). Super creepy fun!

In the episode I watched last night a character played by Tim Robbins walked in to Shawshank Prison and I literally laughed out loud.

I grew them from seed bought at Pinetree Seeds, superseeds.com , in case you'd like to try. Next year I'll grow a bit more because I am using Roselle every day. Every couple of weeks I powder a few dried pieces in a dedicated small coffee grinder. I store in a small jar and add pinches to what ever I want. Veggie filled tortillas get a sprinkle of Roselle for bright flavor. I add a pinch to lemonade (with my gin, ha-ha), add a bit to some salad dressing, etc. Nice on potatoes or other starchy dishes: think of how Middle Eastern and African dishes use sumac. I have found that the powder makes tea a lot easier than the whole dried calyx. If you are curious about nutrition, Rozelle is worth looking up.
