I'm pretty into being productive when possible. But sometimes I have to make a hellish drive through the desert to visit my parents. So I have enjoyed a few audiobooks along the way. But is there a way to get them for free (besides the library)? Like is there a place online I can download them? Does anyone use audible.com? I could rip them off youtube but not sure about the legality of that.

Just curious why you've excluded the library because that is pretty much THE place for free books. Depending on where you live, your library is likely to have free Audiobook and eBook downloads now, you don't even have to go into the library or worry about overdue fines.
If you've never used Audible, they always have some kind of sign up bonus with a couple of free books.
Not free but my local Goodwill has oodles of them over in the CD and Music section. I've had a few problems with scratched discs but they're very reasonable about returning defective items.
I think Cracker Barrel is still doing their Audiobook thing. You buy an audiobook at one restaurant, return it down the road and they refund nearly all the purchase price … I think they keep a couple of bucks. Buy another one. It's a marketing ploy to keep you coming back to their restaurants but some people love it.

I agree that the absolute best source is the library. I've listened to dozens of them from there.
Not free but something to consider is buying them used online and then reselling them. If you search on ebay, you can find people selling lots of multiple audiobooks. You could most likely break even or maybe even make a profit by reselling them individually when you're done.Steve

I used to drive for a long part of my work day. I requested books on CD from the library, then copy them into iTunes and listen through my iPod hooked up to the stereo. Now you can get the right off their website but my library has much fewer here than in the CD format.
I don't know what your sense of humor is like, but anything by David Sedaris makes a long drive fly.
