  • Urgent: website with cheapest international airfares

My brother, 44 years old, died last night. In Japan. I am in shock racing into grief.
His wife asked me to fly over. I need this information fast. I don't know if compassionate fares work for overseas flights.
Will my 12 yo child need a passport to fly with me?
Are there fare discounts or freebies for children?

    Very sorry for your loss.

I don't think "compassionate fares" really exist anymore. Be prepared to pay a pretty penny for last minute flights.

Yes, everyone needs a passport to leave the country.

I would personally call the airlines directly. It's one of those things where it never hurts to ask and a live person will be better able to help you due to the uniqueness of your situation. I'd just start by calling a couple of preferred airlines while comparing online prices (google flights is a useful tool). & even if you don't get anywhere given the time crunch of the situation, you can always call customer service after the fact and ask for a discount given the situation. (My personal experience is the airlines tend to be way lenient if you just ask). I once missed a flight, totally MY fault, and the airline bent over backwards to help me though I just had some totally cheap non-refundable fare. Surely you can find someone in customer service who can help you out given the situation.

Sorry to read this. Take care.

I might even suggest that you call a travel agent; you are under stress and so should use a professional - someone who could find an airline that still has compassionate fairs. Tell them the situation and let them do their job. Under normal circumstances it is worthwhile to diy but in this case time is of the essence (along with money) - find out what they charge to save you the hassle.

Yes! Thank goodness the first person to call me after my brother's wife was my travel agent cousin! For starting under $1400 I can fly to Osaka, Japan and back out of Vancouver, BC, Canada! Saving me $1600 from flying out of Seattle. She's booking the flight for me.

I am not taking my child and husband with me, as either nationality passport my child uses takes 5 business processing days to secure in an emergency.
