Does anyone know how to make an inexpensive homemade carpet cleaner

I would like to clean my carpet using a homemade carpet cleaner that does not contain any harsh chemicals. Years ago, I remember about hearing about one of these you can make at home...possibly using kitchen ingredients. I have tan carpet, and it is newer, so I don't want to possibly damage the color. Does anyone know of any good recipes that might help save money on carpet cleaner?

Hmmm..... I don't know of any good recipes. I bet you could google them!!! I would making use something with baking soda in it and prehaps a nice shampoo or Oxy Clean!!!

Thanks...I thought years ago that someone had one with baking soda in it, or I maybe tried to make one. Wouldn't advise using it on a tan carpet like mine, though!

I just use spot cleaner on the spots and hot water in my steam cleaner. No soap. I have heard to use white vinegar in place of carpet shampoo.

I read somewhere to use 1/2 ammonia and 1/2 white vinegar. I've used that for a few years and its worked fine. I have the mixture in a spray bottle.

Using white foamy shaving cream works as well. I would suggest you first test it out on a small spot that's unnoticeable.

Pure Vinegar and clean rags works for almost anything (I have a toddler so I know!)
Do a test just in case
Area rugs that fit on the washer strategically put on stain prone areas help too

Carpet spots: Club soda cleans and polishes, can remove carpet stains

Spot cleaner #2: sprinkle with baking soda, Step 2. 1:7 ratio Vinegar & water. Spray and soak up with towel

Carpet Cleaner: combine ½ gallon hottest water, ½ cup each, ammonia, white dishwasher detergent powder in a bucket. Scrub this mixed solution using terry cloth. In bucket #2 combine 1 gallon hottest water & 1 cup vinegar. Scrub solution #2 into carpet. Use a dry towel to soak up moisture working in 4’ x 4’ sections. Change solutions as needed.

Carpet Cleaner [machine] One Cup spic & span, ½ c. ammonia, 2 gallons hottest water

Carpet Cleaner 2: 1 cup each vinegar, ammonia, 2 cups baking soda, 1 gal. v/hot water

I swear by white vinegar; it cleaned my carpet beautifully. However, the smell lingers until after it dries. If you can stand that, then you're good. I used it straight on really bad stains (blotting it up - in my case, I scrubbed it in then vacuumed it out), then put 1 cup with 1 gallon of very, very hot water in my machine.

Place these solutions in spray bottles and spray them lightly onto the stain:-

• Detergent solution: Mix 1 tbsp of transparent liquid dishwashing detergent, like Dawn or Joy, into 1 cup of warm water.
• Vinegar solution: Mix 1/4 cup of water and 1/4 cup of white vinegar.
• Ammonia solution: Mix 1 tbsp of clear household ammonia with 1/2 cup of warm water.
