  • How Many Quotes Do You Get?

Generally how many quotes do you get before selecting a company - for auto insurance?

I got three. Stuck with the company I had used under my parents. Still been with this company many years now.

I'll call about 3-4 and then compare the rate to the plan and figure what's best for my money. Sometimes if you tell them you got a lower rate from a competitor, they may match it or even beat it.

Rather than one company like Allstate, State Farm, Intact etc. I suggest using an insurance agent who shops the re-insurance market for the best fit to meet your needs for the best price. If you can combine home/renters & auto you'll likely get a better rate.

You need to know what you need in insurance before contacting an agent. It depends on your car, age, condition, deductibles, replaceables, personal assets etc.

Just went through this myself. Our current coverage (2 cars) is with Progressive. Called around and after a couple of days of communicating with brokers (online), we were able to maintain same coverage and our premiums went from $615 to $450 (6 months paid in full). Purchasing online (Progressive) was certainly most convenient...but recommend to call/email around..may make the time spent doing so worthwhile.
