  • Upgrading to my first smartphone

Thinking it might be time to march bravely into 2006 and upgrade to my first smartphone. Looking at Androids. Here's my question - am I correct that, with most smartphones, there's basically two ways to access the internet or play apps - either through the data network that comes as part of your phone's monthly plan, or through a WiFi network that you might find offered at Starbucks or basically anywhere? The only difference being, if your phone's data plan cuts you off after a certain number of GBs, it would be wise to take advantage of a free WiFi network when possible (because you aren't using your phone plan's data budget)?

My other option was to purchase a tablet for internet and app use, but if I understand correctly, if I did that, I'd have to find a WiFi network whenever I wanted to go online? Is there away to purchase web access on an as-needed basis for tablets?

Yes, you are correct. I typically use public WiFi (with VPN) first, and cellular data only as a backup when WiFi is not available. That way, I have been able to keep my cellphone bill down to roughly $20 each month.

You are also correct that a tablet can theoretically be used like a cellphone, provided that WiFi is available. However, some tablets are also capable of picking up and using cellular data. Most, however, are WiFi only. Separately, you can also buy hotspot devices where they use cellular data, but then re-broadcast that as a WiFi signal for use with your WiFi-only devices.
