  • My Garden is Done!!

I took yesterday off from work and finished my garden. Got a fence up, a gate installed, and everything tilled and planted. It was a long hard day of work, but I'm pretty happy with the results. Now I just have to keep an eye on everything and keep it watered. I got a load of cow manure from a friend who has a farm up the road from me, so I have an endless supply of fertilizer.

It will be nice to have my own vegetables this year.

Looks good. I have to fence mine also to keep the deer out.

Have had some trouble with my initial planting, about half the beans came up and none of the lettuce, probably got some bad seed or something. Have since replanted and things are coming along.

Nice pic of your garden. What kinds of things are you growing?

We enjoy gardening! Lots of tomatoes and peppers, and trying beets and lettuce this year.

Several varieties of tomatoes, 2 different type of potatoes, a few varieties of peppers (hot and mild), lettuce, beans, cucumbers, kahlrabi.

That looks wonderful! I like the idea. I might do the same on our farm.

We've been harvesting lots of radishes, cucumbers and zucchini this week. Lots of green tomatoes on the plants but no red ones yet.

I've also got 24 hills of pumpkins that are progressing nicely.

I'll take a few updated pictures and upload them as soon as I get a minute.

BJ - have you figured out a way to get cheap/free potting soil?

We live in an urban area and I don't want to drop $10 on a bag of dirt if I can get it another way.

Oh, yeah, how is that garden coming in?

I picked 19 pounds of little pickling cucumbers in the last 5 days. I'm fermenting two kinds of pickles by the gallon and half gallon. I made 7 quarts of vinegar & honey spiced pickle. Salads will abound from here to the end of summer, or whenever the cucumber beetles start spreading disease.

Oh, the first two types of pickle called for garlic. I've dug 4.6 pounds of garlic this year. Think I need to visit the mom'n'pop grocery and see if they will make a trade. It is a tiny market where the person at the register can actually make a deal. A few years ago we had a banner tomato season and traded for olive oil.
