The dirt around me is very fertile. I get it from the woods behind my house.Originally posted by james.hendrickson View PostBJ - have you figured out a way to get cheap/free potting soil?
We live in an urban area and I don't want to drop $10 on a bag of dirt if I can get it another way.
I could buy topsoil in bulk by the yard from the landscape supply company around the corner. I can't remember what they charge, but it is way cheaper than buying it bagged. But, I don't need to go that route being that I have n endless supply of quality soil behind the house.Brian

I'm not sure of the final tally for this season, but we canned and froze A LOT of beans. Made gallons of tomato sauce, and canned tons of hot and mild peppers.Originally posted by Joan.of.the.Arch View PostOh, yeah, how is that garden coming in?
I picked 19 pounds of little pickling cucumbers in the last 5 days. I'm fermenting two kinds of pickles by the gallon and half gallon. I made 7 quarts of vinegar & honey spiced pickle. Salads will abound from here to the end of summer, or whenever the cucumber beetles start spreading disease.
Oh, the first two types of pickle called for garlic. I've dug 4.6 pounds of garlic this year. Think I need to visit the mom'n'pop grocery and see if they will make a trade. It is a tiny market where the person at the register can actually make a deal. A few years ago we had a banner tomato season and traded for olive oil.
In all, it was a great garden year.Brian
