  • Thoughts on cordless electric lawn care equipment

I live on 2 and a half acres, so I don't see myself replacing my gasoline lawn tractor or chainsaw anytime soon, but I am interested in some battery powered equipment for some of the smaller jobs around my property.

I am thinking about picking up a blower, a hedge trimmer, and an electric chainsaw for smaller liming jobs.
Ethanol blended gasoline kills small engines, especially ones that sit and don't get a lot of use.
I like the idea of having a couple of universal battery packs that I can use for multiple tools.

Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations?

Right now I have gas-everything and it's stuff I bought from Stihl a while ago, and it just keeps going. Eventually, if the blower goes, I'll replace that with something electric. The batteries have enough wallop now to be useful. I need to upgrade to a larger mower. I have a gas walk-behind 21" and it takes me over 2 hours to mow the lawn. The exercise is good....and it's also time for a riding mower. I'd consider something battery-operated if one exists.

I've been using 91-octane "premium" fuel with up to 10% ethanol in my gas equipment for years. I also mix it with Stabil. For the stuff that requires 50:1 gasil in a 2-stroke, I use Stihl's recommended-goo to mix with the gas. I've never had carb issues in more than 10 years. The other key is to run fresh fuel through those systems at least once per year. I've since switched to ethanol-free 92-octane since I can buy it near where I live. I think its icing on the cake. Fuel with ethanol works fine as long as the lines get flushed through every so often.
    History will judge the complicit.

I think electric is the way to go for blowers and string line weed trimmers.
Electric chain saw would be fine if it gets minimal use.

EGO string trimmer and leaf blower going strong 3-4 years now.

probably obvious but you want to buy items where the same battery can be used across them.

I have a Husqvarna gas powered self propelled lawn mower and I absolutely love it. I love it so much, i purchased one for my Mother, and then when I killed mine (trying to mow some stuff I knew I shouldn't) I bought a new engine. Sadly Husqvarna no longer produces gas powered mowers.

A couple of weeks ago, I visited a local lawn care equipment company and while opining about Husqvarna's departure from gas powered, the lady pointed to the Husqvarna electric mow she had on the floor and said it had been there for two years. No one will buy it and she couldn't recommend it in good faith.

I've got an ECHO PAS series weed eater. Basically you can change attachments to make it a blower or pole saw all using the same power end that is great. Again I liked it so much I bought one for my Mother (maybe your seeing a trend in my Christmas purchases).

She decided she wanted to try an electric weed eater, so my Sister got her one two Christmas's ago. It lasted exactly 1 year. She also got a battery powered blower. It has held up OK. No clue on brand names.

Specific to the fuel, I HIGHLY recommend getting the premixed fuel. Also for your normal mower, I recommend finding a source of Ethanol Free gas.

We use cordless chainsaws (Black and Decker) here on the farm in areas where it is too far from an electrical outlet. The gas powered ones are just too heavy for us to life anymore.
