If you need to take off from work, drive to the courthouse, pay to park, buy lunch, and possibly pay for extra childcare hours, it's going to cost you way more than $5/day. We constantly talk about how 70% of the population lives paycheck to paycheck. How many people can actually afford to go to jury duty?
In my area, juries are almost totally government workers (who receive full salary while on jury duty) and retired people.

I sat on a jury with a doctor who had his own office. He pled with the judge that he couldn't possibly close his office for the expected 9 months of a convoluted civil trial. The judge chose him anyway. (After the 3rd time he was late back from lunch, the judge threw him off and he smiled all the way out of the courtroom.)

      That makes sense.

If that happened to me, I'd be on the phone to my attorney the minute I could to try and fight the decision. Serving on jury duty shouldn't destroy someone's business or financially cripple them.

I'd like to serve on a jury. I've never been picked, I just sat there and read my book during selection. My job (nursing) paid for it. I did have to pay for parking and lunch.
