amarowsky -- I absolutely love your perspective. Everything you're doing seriously sounds like a dream. Honestly, if I wasn't in the military & need to hit 20 years of service to retire (which is a large chunk of my FIRE plans), I'd love to do something similar. Once I actually do retire, that's probably what I'll end up doing, just random stuff I do for fun or interest, regardless of the pay (or lack thereof). Mad props.

amarowsky - I totally love your post. What a great outlook and what a great position to be in, especially at your age.

      * Despite the high cost of living, it remains very popular.
      * Why should I pay for my daughter's education when she already knows everything?
      * There are no shortcuts to anywhere worth going.

I don't think it's the hedonistic lifestyle. I think a lot of it stems from defining your life by your career. The status associated with working. They had it on the today show this mornings (as I was in the dental chair again) talking about people who lost their jobs in the pandemic and were looking but the "stigma" associated with not having a job made it harder to find a job. All of us know this.

As I stay at home not working longer (since August) I find myself more relaxed. I know how much I left slide while working and I was more concerned with keeping us all afloat than anything else. I let everything go both kids work and the house.

He gave me the, "Well someone gets it," look. I am used to the "eeew," comments, and I will point out how stupid they are.
P.S. I wasn't being very conscious about it when I wrote this. But... This kid did bring up FIRE at some point after that. That is his plan. It just seemed obvious to me he was making $$$$$$$$ and not dealing with any big expenses.
